Guest Speaker: Peter introduced Colleen Hughson, Warrnambool’s Citizen of the Year.
Colleen spoke about her visit to a local beach in 2016 and noticing cotton buds in the sand and wanting to know how and why they were there, and wanting then to do something about beach litter. In 2017 millions of micro-plastic beads were discharged from the Sewerage Treatment Plant. Colleen and other volunteers formed “Good Will Nurdle Hunting”, a group effort to collect the nurdles and draw attention to the problem. Colleen and others then formed Beach Patrol 3280 to collect litter on South West beaches. They have successfully lobbied for a ban on plastic stemmed cotton buds and removed several tonnes of rubbish from our beaches. Her endevours have been rightly recognised by Council.
Members Announcements:
- Ian:- Attended ameeting with WCC regarding Crisis Accomodation. Suggested to Council that they contribute $10k towards this project & make their Caravan Parks available off-season.
- Jan:- Elegantly modelled her $25 aprons
- Peter: Movie ticket sales are slow
