Hello Members of Daybreak and welcome to Bulletin 11
This week’s meeting saw us back at the Lady Bay Resort enjoying yet another delicious breakfast. The feedback from members regarding the move to the Lady Bay has been most positive and we look forward to a long association with the venue.
Our Guest Speaker this week was Shaun Miller from Warrnambool City Council. Shaun informed us on the National Hydrogen Strategy with Mariestad, Sweden and the connection that Warrnambool has formed with the area and their innovative sustainable programs. This was a very interesting and informative topic with Shaun answering many questions from the audience.

Next week’s speaker will be Daybreak member Ian Watson. Ian will talk on his recent month long trip to PNG where he worked on several water projects among other tasks assisting schools and other organisations in the villages. Andrew Suggett is rostered to present a fun or ‘other’session.

A special Children and Grandchildren Meeting with a Grand Final Theme - Our weekly meeting on September 25th will have a Grand Final theme and we will be welcoming your children and grandchildren on that day so please organize the children in your families to attend as it is sure to be a fun day and it is hoped everyone will get behind the theme and dress accordingly! Myself, Janey, Chez and Geoff will be absent on that day due to the RI president’s visit to Ballarat and just as well as I’ve had to pack my Essendon gear away for another season! President Chris Preston will conduct the meeting in my absence and I’m sure he, along with Barry, will make the morning very entertaining.
Grant Application – Daybreak has been successful in it’s application to the Warrnambool City Council Community Development Grants Program. Myself and Jan attended a Civic Reception on Wednesday evening where the Council handed out forty five grants to community organizations in the Warranmbool district. It was amazing to hear from representatives of each group who outlined how their allocated funds would be spent. Thanks to Glenn and his team for pursuing the grant and making application. The grant to Daybreak will be largely used to repair and update our trailer and towards replacement of our marquee.
Rosters circulating – Rosters are currently circulating for the Volunteer Expo on September 15 and 16 and also the Lift the Lid and Bunnings Day on October 5 and 6. See Geoff for the Volunteer Expo roster and Chris for the Lift the Lid/Bunnings Roster. At the Volunteer Expo we will work alongside the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East and for the Bunnings event we will be working alongside the Rotary Club of Warrnambool, Rotary Club of Warrnambool East and Rotary Club of Port Fairy. At the latter event we’ll be aiming to “Lift the Lid” and create awareness of mental health while raising money for mental health research. We aim to do this by raffling several hampers over the two day period and will be asking each club involved to provide two hampers. Ali Dennis has kindly offered to coordinate Daybreak’s two hampers.
Foundation Fundraiser – It has been suggested that a Foundation Fundraiser is needed but the movie fundraising nights seem to be in excess lately with several organizations advertising such events. However, there still exists the need to raise awareness of the End Polio Now campaign and as it is World Polio Day on October 24 it has been suggested that we could raise this awareness through a community breakfast on the Civic Green and to promote it widely through businesses particularly in the CBD. We would welcome members feedback on this idea. A group will meet on Tuesday evening to discuss the proposal further and we welcome members feedback via email prior to the meeting.
Market Dates – Summer is approaching which heralds our busy fundraising period. The dates for markets have been released as below:
Hillside Markets – Sundays 24th Nov, 8th and 22nd December 9am-1pm on the Civic Green - $30 for each site booked.
Summer Night Markets – Fridays Dec 27th, Jan 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st 4.30-8.30pm Lake Pertobe – food and Beveridge stall holders $170 per site or $180 if insurance is required.
It is the general consensus of the members that we no longer participate in the Hillside Markets which are held prior to Christmas on the Civic Green, but continue to participate in the Summer Night Markets at Lake Pertobe on Friday evenings excluding the market scheduled for January 31 as this is the date that we usually assist Wunta with their breakfast on the Civic Green.
Outdoor Movie Nights – The outdoor movie nights will be held on Friday December 27, January 3rd and January 10th coinciding with three of our market barbecues dates. Sandra is in the process of selecting the movies that will be screened
Board meeting August –At the recent Board meeting we decided on two charities to which our Guest Speakers could nominate a donation from the Club on their behalf. The first is a locally based cause Backpacks for Kids and the second is the Purple Truck nominated as the DG’s project. The Purple Truck is a mobile dialysis that visits remote communities in the Northern Territory. We are also in the process of creating a certificate
Our Treasurer Jan also reported that the invoices for members additional administrative fee of $80 were in the process of being circulated to members. A reminder that members can pay the amount by instalments if they so wish.
A discussion also took place at Board level regarding the role and function of the various Committees. The date of our weekly meeting on October 2nd has been set aside for all Directors to give a brief report to members outlining their Committee’s objectives and progress. This will be an opportunity for other members to have input to areas they are not directly involved in.
Fashion Parade – Daizy Boutique and Gaz Man are joining forces for a fashion parade with proceeds going to the Rotary Club of Warrnambool. Held at the City Memorial Bowls Club and commencing at 7.30 pm on Thursday September 26, the parade costs $25 per head. Ticket holders will receive champagne on arrival, a lucky entrance ticket and a $25 voucher for Daizy Boutique plus a discount voucher for Gazman; Great value for a worthy cause.
Thanks must go to Jenny Turner for another strong month in the Soup Kitchen. May and August are the months that Daybreak assists but Jenny does far more than this helping out at other times and of course coordinating the roster for Daybreakers in the two months that we do service.
Happy birthday to Janey who celebrated a birthday on the first day of Spring and congratulations to Geoff Grec who had a Rotary Anniversay on Sep 3rd - a 5th Anniversary as Geoff joined Rotary in 2014.
