Guest speaker Amy Randell is presently a Teaching Assistant at a bilingual school in Frankfurt Germany. The church that she attends in Germany has been very involved in helping refugees on the island of Lesvos in Greece. Amy’s plans are to travel to Lesvos Greece in July and work for a year inside the women’s and children’s section of the Moria Refugee Camp. The camp has housed about 1,000,000 refugees all escaping from warn torn areas and seeking a better life away from war and starvation. In 2019, there have been 3,500 refugees that have arrived and of those more than 50% have been women and children, unaccompanied minors and disabled. The refugees are arriving from Syrian, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. Moria is a decommissioned military compound with extremely poor living conditions. “Houses” are made from shipping containers and will often house four or five families. There is no electricity. The weather is cold and damp. People are dying because they have been sick and have been unable to get health care. There are very few workers inside the camp. Garbage is piled up. No potable water and fires are used for heat.
Amy is working with the Euro relief group handing our blankets, and tents and visiting with families. Her group recently was given the job of providing food to the refugees who are waiting to be processed. Very few government officials so waits times are extremely long. Line ups for food with some people unable to wait in line (disabled) not receiving food.
The Rotary Club of Fenelon Falls wishes Amy safe travels on her mission.
