Tonight we are going to celebrate the Vocational Award of Excellence presentation to Tim & Di Goodall.
Warrnambool Timber Industries started in Tim & Di's garage in the early 1980s. Both of these people are accomplished business people in the own right but together have been a formidable team.
Much of the equipment has been custom built or adapted from the old timber mill. Most of the machinery is locally made wherever possible.
Both Tim & Di have travelled extensively to develop the business.
Over time have employed over 700 staff. They have also helped new business in the industry to get started to ensure the quality of supply.
Have donated time and resources to further the industry.
Tim is also involved in Timber Training Creswick, a registered RTO, which provides training for people in the timber industry, such as saw doctor training for saw-milling. This is a highly technical and specialised skill critical to the work of the mill. Tim is the chairman of the board of directors for that organisation.
Tim is also chairman of the Glue and Laminated Timber Association of Australia. Tim also sits on the standards committee for timber laminating which provides a fully audited quality assurance program according to Australian Standards.
Warrnambool Timber Industries is one of the largest Timber beam mills in Australia.
Tim outlined some of the benefits of Glue-Lam:
Diminishes the need to use large trees. Cutting a large timber will reveal knots that compromise its ability to carry load. The engineers have to use the lowest common-denominator of wood.
With Glue-Lam we can use small pieces of timber which are too short to be used in house trusses, etc. These are often the strongest pieces of timber because they come from the outside edges of the tree.
We use finger-joining equipment to join the short lengths of wood into very long lengths of wood with a known strength. You can routinely get up to 80% of the strength of a clear piece of timber, but most pieces of timber are not clear of knots. The highest grade timber is used on the outside and the lower grades on the inside where there is less stress. Overall the beam will have a much greater strength than can be accomplished with a single piece. This also provides for a more affordable product.
In presenting the award Mal acknowled that not only have Tim and Di led a successful business but they have expanded the industry.
