Warrnambool Rotary Club
Meeting held at WFC 8th January 2019
Meeting opened by Sergeant Ian Cairns.
President Michael Boyd welcomed everyone including guests at the meeting — Brooke, Monique, and Lily.
Also advised that Louise Brennan and Graeme Ross are in hospital, (S of G).
Loyal Toast lead by John Hunt.
President’s comments:
- Happy New Year everyone, I hope that 2019 will be a prosperous and happy one for all.
- It was great to see so many attending the Christmas function at Lake Pertobe, it was very enjoyable, despite the chilly breeze.
- Tonight we will have Club Service meetings so I hope you are sitting with the other members of your Committee.
- The Emergency Services Capability Forum was very successful, thanks to all who were able to help out. I will ask Trevor to fill in the volunteer hours book on your behalf.
- Rotary Car Raffle ticket sales are progressing well, see Terry if you want more books to sell yourself or if you can help with a couple of time slots. Again Terry will complete the volunteer hours based on his roster.
- Southern Right Creative Festival (Quilt Show) is on next weekend – Andrea will talk to us soon about this.
- Thanks to those who offered to help Daybreak with homeless showers and washing program and also those who have offered to help with the ‘Hole in One’ competition (a project of our that we gave to our daughter club).
- Approval has been for the first stage of Ted King Park (fence along the break of slope above the river). Council will buy the material and help us, Clontarf Academy, Ski Club and Rowing Club with construction.
- The Board of our Club has agreed to offer and additional Honorary membership to recognise many years of service by one of our members from our Club. Ron Rauert joined our Club in March 1957 (aged 30) – this represents 62 years of service through Rotary to our community. Ron’s health has not been too good lately and he has only been able to get to meetings with the help of Keith McLeod. Keith McLeod recommended that an Honorary Membership for Ron was appropriate and our Board agrees. Ron this does not mean that you shouldn’t come to meetings, but if you are to at the top of your form, you can have the night off, you deserve it.
Announcements:
Trevor Williams:
The Daybreak Club runs Sunday evening session for homeless people, and we have volunteered helpers for the next 3 Sundays – volunteers required.
Forthcoming Bunnings BBQ 31st March.
February 8th is Relay for Life where our club will be volunteering for a public BBQ and Car Parking assistance.
John Beks:
Notice that the meeting on 29th January will be at CROSSELY. It is for Friends of St Brigid and is a Rural Urban Night. (No Barn Dancing we hope). It is a fundraiser for FoSB’s to enable the group to meet their financial commitments for the year. Please attend, with guest speaker being the one and only John Beks on the subject of “Clog Wogs”, which will cover the struggles and successes of Dutch migrants in the early fifties in our district.
Please notify David Brown of intentions to attend or not with guests. Meal Cost is $22, with drinks at Bar Prices.
Terry ONeill:
Commented on the success so far of the Car Raffle, with over $2500 taken at present.
The Emergency Services Capability Forum put $1575 from the BBQ into the coffers with another $524.40 coming from donations. Great effort!
Other fund raising issues were discussed at the Fundraising Committee meeting.
A Side Track: The meal tonight was a lovely Chicken FILO Roll with Scalloped potatoes, (local of course), and a lovely salad. Dessert was equally as appetizing with a Blueberry Flan.
Further Announcements:
Louise Keogh: Commented on the Student Exchange program, but your scribe was too busy eating his FILO Roll and Flan that he didn’t pick up on a lot of the comments made. Louise needs host families while the additional students are in Warrnambool – (11th – 14th January)
Andrea Sampson:
Discussed the timetable for the upcoming Quilt show. Workers are needed on the Sunday afternoon. Andrea also thanked members for donations of money for the Food Share program and stated that the funds were used to purchase a Peanut Butter pyramid. This can be seen on Food Share Facebook.
Fines Master Ian Cairns:
Good to see the young whippersnappers put in their place Ian. With a wide range of fines given out out, (some dubious apparently), it was highlighted by George McLeod’s announcement of his engagement to Brooke Jensen. Congratulations to both George and Brooke.
Duties next week:
Fellowship: Cathy Bligh
Attendance: Rachel and Keith
Properties: Terry and Mal
Fines: Trevor Williams
Chair: Lou Keogh
Reporter: Gerry Delaney
Thought for the week:
Since there is only one of me, does that make me endangered or a limited edition?
Meeting closed with the Club Service Committee meetings.
