MEETING 12 MARCH 2019
Meeting held at Warrnambool Football Club, 12 March 12019

Ian Cairns opened meeting at 6:15.

Loyal toast read admirably by Mary Fitzgerald

President Michael hobbled to lectern for his report.
  1. Guests were introduced – Emily Reid, Cathy Reid and Peter Reid.  Also Frank Monger from Portland Rotary.  Janick our Rotary exchange student also.
  2. Wilma Gibson, (to be inducted soon) was also introduced.  (Well done on the weekend Wilma.)

President Michael
  • Tonight is another of the highlights of the year when we hear back from a young person we have supported to attend a personal / professional development activity. Emily Reid was nominated by our Club and selected to attend the National Science Youth Forum in Canberra (?)
  • I understand that the Peace Concert was very successful and the Peace Awards were a useful addition to the night.  Someone to give a brief report tonight?
  • We will invite three awardees nominated by us to attend a meeting in the near future to be formally acknowledged by our Club.
  • Update on Bunny and Graeme.
  • Don’t forget volunteer book fill out any volunteer time and pass around
  • Fund raising movie night for “DIK” on 21st March – tickets from? Green Book- I can personally recommend the movie, well worth seeing.
  • Folk Festival over for another year, we may have not filled some shifts but still a significant contribution from our Club. Thanks to David for his patience in organising the roster.
  • Don’t forget the Bunnings BBQ 31st March and Fashion Parade 7th April.
  • Trevor and Leanne married on Saturday, away on a one week honeymoon
  • Board meeting tonight
  • Members Sheet for night: Well done, no discrepancies Rotarians.  36 here, 9 apologies, with 3 guests.

Dinner served on time:  Lamb Roast and veges, plus a delicious Apple Strudel.  (Must admit I missed my pancake on Shrove Tuesday.)

Members Announcements:
  1. Glenn Brotchie: Note that an auction committee meeting held at the club next Tuesday, 5:00pm where, we hope, the letters to businesses will be packaged, as will the members parcels for visitations.
  2. David Brown: Sincere thanks to all who participated at the ‘folkies’ last weekend.  Great effort again, and response was worthy of a great club.
  3. Janick: Advertised the forthcoming Youth Exchange Movie night – The Green Room @ $15 per head.

Rachel Furnell introduced our guest speaker for the evening: National Youth Science Forum participant Emily Reid.  Emily gave a positive report on her 10-day experience in the bubble of Canberra. She experienced a whole gamut of experiences, but especially in her own areas of interest.

Rotarian Ian Cairns slung her a zinger in the form of the issues of pill testing, especially the counseling process involved and the success of it. Emily responded well.

President Michael closed the meeting with the following comments.  He congratulated Emily on her experience especially in her area of immunology, and wished her the best.  He also thanked the guests for attending.

Special Note from Cathy Bligh:
All members note that Anne Adams will be present early at the next meeting with an expectation to sell members and partners tickets to the Fashion Show.  Cathy will follow up the next week to catch the stragglers.

A MEMBERSHIP MOMENT
Just recently one of our seniors, well respected Rotarian, reminded me of this adage – why don’t we just get off our ASK and ASK people to join our clubs? This has worked surprisingly well in the past and present day.

Rotarians have all sorts of reasons not to ask others to join us. I am too old, I have no business contacts anymore, I have asked all my friends. Yet, most likely, that is how we were introduced to Rotary. We all still have contacts – the local pharmacist, our family members, our children’s friends, the GP – the list goes on. It seems so simple, why don’t we do it?

How many of us have introduced a new member in the last 20 years, how about the last 2 years? Why not, whose job is it if it’s not each of us? Have you been through your alumni – past Foundation recipients, Group Study Exchange team members, Youth Exchange students (Rotary Club Central can get you reports on these), teachers from local schools that your club has helped, aging out Rotaractors, recent retirees, corporate partners – I am sure you can now think of many?
