Weekly wrap up with President President Peter
Guests: Bruce Campbell & Greg Lee’s 2 daughters, partners & grandchildren
Apologies: Ann Doldson, Rachel Furnell, Chris Stebbing, Rob McDonald, Svet Lineham, Kayla Biender, Anne Adams
Guest Speaker:
Our guest speaker Bruce Campbell has volunteered with the Warrnambool Coast Care Land Care Network for 20 years. The Network has been operating for 30 years. His experience includes working on projects on outback aboriginal settlements in SA and project management in Portland and central Australia, The WCLCN is the preeminent environmental organisation here and its activities extend to the Moyne and Corangamite Shires. It has over the years successfully restored native vegetation off Harris Street and at the Flume. WCLCN recently launched LandLife SouthWest a program to support farmers to adopt regenerative agricultural practices which will have additional biodiversity benefits. We wish this venture well.
PNG Project: The Club is hoping to have 150 birthing kits put together within two weeks. Elijah reports that the birthing kits are “life-saving equipment”. Village mid-wives deliver babies with their bare hands despite the risks involved.
Elijah also reported the distribution of Rotary books to local schools and kindergartens and the use of Rotary donated sewing machines.
Redistricting Proposal:
DG Christine and District Directors outlined the impact likely on our zone at a Zoom meeting Wednesday night. The overall situation is that the 17 Districts in Zone 8 will be reduced to 10. This is necessary because of the large decline in membership over the past few decades. It is considered that a viable District should have a minimum of 2.000 members. Our District 9780 will be incorporated into a much larger District that will extend to Melbourne and as far away as Holbrook in NSW. It will have a membership of 3,800 and will be one of the largest in terms of membership. Mt Gambier, Millicent and Bordertown Clubs will join a one SA District. The redistributing is expected to be operating in 2028/2029. Christine and Tonie believe the outcome can be a positive for our Clubs.
The Club can relax now that Chris Stebbing has offered to be President Elect. Thanks Chris.
There is now a vacancy for the position of Director of Club Service. Leon gave the meeting a brief overview of this “easy” role.
Deb reports a successful book sale on Saturday, raised about $750 and moved a lot books. Well done Deb and those that helped.

Wisecrack of the week
from Rotarian John Beks

“THE TRUMP TRANSLATOR” (4 – 7)

4) “To be or not to be, that’s the question”. William Shakespeare, 1603.

“Trump Translator”: Should we BE? Or should we NOT BE? I asked a lot of smart people, almost as smart as me – and nobody knew. So I said we’re going TO BE. I said it very strongly at the time. It’s better to be than not to be and that’s the way it should be. Every one agrees.

5) “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight on the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills: we shall never surrender” Winston Churchill, 1940.

“Trump Translator”: Surrender? NOT HAPPENING! We will fight on the streets – even on those strange intersections in Melbourne, Australia, where you can turn right from the left lane as long as there is no oncoming tram. VERY CONFUSING!

6) “Know thyself”. Socrates, 450 BC

“Trump Translator”: Many wise and very learned people describe me as a very stable genius. But I already know that!

7) “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”. Lao Tzu, 6th-4th century BC.

“Trump Translator”: Tremendous distance, a thousand miles. I’ve done the calculations. A very long way. Luckily I have a plane! LOSERS walk!

Polio Global Eradication initiative

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is a public-private partnership led by national governments with six partners – the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Gates Foundation and Gavi, the vaccine alliance. Its goal is to eradicate polio worldwide.

You can have a look through their website through the link below. The website has lots of up to date news about polio world wide, and resources.
Glenn receives their monthly newsletter and mentions there are great articles to read through as Rotarians.
Polio in Australia

Poliovirus has been detected in a sample from the Subiaco wastewater treatment plant in Perth.

Health officials say it is a vaccine-derived strain that has most likely come from someone who has travelled overseas, and presents a very low risk due to WA's high vaccination rates.

Reminder! We are collecting 10c bottles for our projects. This is a really easy way of earning 100% profit for out club. You can utilise the app, or Brooke has business cards with the barcode on it. All you need to do is scan the barcode at the machine, then put the bottles in.
Alternatively, you can put your bottles in the bucket at each Rotary meeting, or drop them to Brooke and George's house on Kelp St.
