Judy introduced Dr Andrew Chow, GP and Founding Director of the Leila Rose Foundation to members.
In response to losing his daughter Leila a rare cancer at 18months of age Andrew set up this Foundation, dedicated to the memory of Leila and dedicated to assisting families affected by Rare Childhood Cancer.
The Foundation offers support and guidance to families when faced with the painful reality that there may be no known cure for their child’s cancer. The Foundation has set up a world wide network of medical specialists, Best Doctors, to offer the best available treatment options,
There are over 300 children diagnosed with rare cancer per year. The Foundation is only financially able to support 50 children and families a year and would like to be able to support more. The Foundation relies on grants from philanthropic organisations, donations and fund raising to support it’s work.
With that in mind Andrew is asking for assistance from our Club to sell Leila Rose pins at the Warrnambool Racing Club’s May Race meeting. The funds raised by the Foundation will be matched by the Bendigo Bank.
A very worthwhile activity for the Club to consider.
Being Rotary’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Month:
The Sariri village development project.
“Background to the project: In November 2007 Oro Province in Papua New Guinea suffered extensive flooding, loss of life and property damage during Cyclone Guba. One of the many villages in Oro Province that were devastated by the cyclone was Sariri. Subsequent to the disaster Elijah Sarigari, a former teacher and one of the community leaders of Oro Province, made contact with his former PNG school Principal, Reverend Donald Johnstone, who was living in Geelong at the time of the disaster, seeking help. Reverend Johnstone in turn contacted Anton Van Doornik of the Rotary Club of Geelong. Both Reverend Johnstone and Anton went to Sariri and it was agreed that assistance in rebuilding could be provided.
Since then there have been Rotary teams working at Sariri Village in 2011, 2013 and 2015”
Next Tuesday we are hearing from Amanda Hennessy from Foodshare. Everyone is asked to bring a box or two of cereal with them for a donation to Foodshare.
