January is the time to celebrate Rotary by making others aware of our programs, of the opportunities Rotary offers and of the events and activities that involve you and your Club.
Sgt. at Arms Andrea Sampson welcomed back Exchange Student Fabio Gomes from the safari trip and commented on his popularity amongst the female students!
These photos of the safari have been kindly provided by members of the Rotary Club of Portland.
President John Hunt welcomed members and guests including guest speakers Geraldine Edgar-Ralph and Casey Vallance. President John advised that he has just completed the ocean swim at Port Campbell. He explained that the large birthday cake was the first in a series of monthly cakes to celebrate those who have had or about to have a birthday during the month. Well timed because John's birthday is in January, along with John Reid, Sue Harris, Graeme Ross, Ron Rauert, Marie Bennett, Margey Brown, John Moir, Trevor Williams, Trevor Blackley and Svet Lineham.
On a sad note Lois O'Meara is moving to Gippsland to be closer to family and start a new and exciting job and will therefore be leaving the Rotary Club of Warrnambool. President John wished Lois well and thanked her for all the work she has done for the club. Louis responded and advised that she will be back from time to time and will come along to some of our meetings, as well as the annual dinner auction.
Tickets for the Peace Concert on March 6 will be available at the Lighthouse Theatre from 24th January - $30 concession for groups of 10 or more - the sooner the Club books, the better the seats. Rotary Convention - June 1st - 4th Sydney 2014 - Message from PDG Marilyn Mercer
A call for volunteers for the convention has come via PDG Cathy Roth. I am hoping that you will be able to spend a couple of hours as a Host Organising Committee Volunteer for the Rotary International Convention 2014 to be held at Olympic Park between May 28 and June 4. Volunteers will be needed before, during and after the convention.
Some say that "one only really knows Rotary after participating in such a Convention". We hope to have 700 volunteers. The more we have the lighter the load for everyone. You, your family and friends do not need to be a paying delegate for the Convention to volunteer. However, volunteers wishing to attend Convention sessions, the House of Friendship and HOC events will need to register and pay the Registration fee separately for the RI Convention. This is a great opportunity for everyone to become involved in a significant Rotary event. Volunteers will be needed at the Sydney Airports, railway stations, hotels and mainly at Olympic Park venues. To register your interest download the registration form from this link - register - to the volunteer page.
Guest speakers Geraldine Edgar-Ralph and Casey Vallance were introduced by Chairman John Beks. Geraldine and Casey provided an informative account on a project to build a library for a school in Davo, Mindano in the district of Cebu in the Philippines which was devastated by the recent typhoon. Geraldine herself lost 7 relatives in the disaster. The trip was an alternative to the year 12 "Schoolies" trips and students were involved in raising funds for the trip and then working on a project to build a new library for the school. The project commenced in 2011 and in 2013 the project was completed. Casey, who was a participating student, told of the absolute joy on the faces of the students when they used the library and saw all the books for the first time. Casey said the experience of working with the building team, and preparing relief packages for those affected by the typhoon, was one of the most rewarding experiences of her life. Geraldine and Casey provided interesting videos of the building process and answered some interesting questions from Rotarians. The Rotary Club of Warrnambool was thanked for its generous donation and support and Geraldine advised that our Club's name had been placed on a plaque acknowledging all those who had contributed to the project.

Morris Schwartz is dying and is on his deathbed. He is with his nurse, his wife, his daughter and 2 sons, and knows the end is near. So he says to them,
"Bernie, I want you to take the Beverly Hills houses." "Sybil, take the apartments over in Los Angeles Plaza." "Hymie, I want you to take the offices over in City Center ." "Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings downtown." The nurse is just blown away by all this, and as Morris slips away, she says to the wife, "Mrs. Schwartz, your husband must have been such a hard working man to have accumulated so much property." Sarah replies, "Property? The idiot had a newspaper route."
