President Michael Boyd
  1. Welcomed all the guests:
    1. Kay Slater, from Inner Wheel
    2. Barry and Helen Comb
    3. Hayley
  2. Club guests:  Ann Donaldson’s mum

Meeting Introduction
  • Thanks to Leah, Tony and Ann we had an interesting and informative meeting last week. The three of them will be winging it to far flung parts of the world soon. We wish them well.
  • Tonight we will hear from our own Brian Trenery about “Selling Rotary”. I am sure that we will hear the statement ‘Membership is everyone’s responsibility’. We are proud of our Club and it is up to us to promote it to others so that they can be part of it.
  • Next week is our annual handover dinner and we invite members to bring guests with them for the evening. It may go a little longer than a normal meeting. Please ensure that guests are booked in and apologies submitted by 1pm next Tuesday. The meal cost will be a bit higher next week.
  • The first steps in the upgrade of Ted King Park have been taken,  a working bee to mark out the line of a new fence along the bank of the park took place last Wednesday. We have engaged a contractor to dig the holes and Council will do some tidying up shortly prior to our next working bee to stand up the first section of the fence.
  • The next football gates weekend is 29/6 – see Trevor if you are free for a shift (2.5 hours).
  • Tonight is the combined Board meeting to be held after the meeting.
  • Make sure you let Anne know if you can help with the science and engineering challenge on 21st June.
  • Check that we have a couple of volunteers for Scribe? (Richard hawker indicated that there is one possible at the moment).
Members Announcements:
  1. Ian Cairns:  Father of the Year packages will be handed out to members for distribution to schools next Tuesday. Apologies for it being on same night as the Changeover but can’t be helped.

    2. The Boomerang Bags begin for next years auction.  Saturdays between 10 – 1 am
    3. Bunnings Appreciation Night was held where updates were given re the running of the BBQ’s.  Indicated that a Cake Stall is possible if no refrigeration required.
    4. Introduced Hayley’s new permanent parents, Barry and Helen Comb from Eppalock.  All three are lucky to be together.
  4. Robbies Swindle:  Winner of $6 was John Hunt.

Some points:
On Selling Rotary  -- we need to persuade someone of the merits of rotary so that they can accept membership.

Aspects of R I Strategic Plan:
  1. Support and strengthen clubs, by, among other things, promoting membership diversity and improving member recruitment and retention.
  2. Focus on and increase humanitarian service, by creating significant projects both locally and internationally, such as eradicating polio.
  3. Brand awareness and publicity advertising such is important.
District 9780 Strategic Plan:
  1. Increase impact via collaboration with other clubs and Brand awareness
  2. Expand our reach and promote Rotary projects widely.
  3. Ensure Rotary is ‘family’ friendly by engaging members in a wide range of activities
What is Diversity:
It is understanding the uniqueness of individuals over many areas such as race, gender etc
Finally think about what it was that got you into Rotary!
President’s Summary:
  1. I encourage as many people to come to the changeover next week.
  2. Thank you Brian for your perspective into ‘What is Rotary’.
  3. All the best to Hayley, Barry and Helen.  We will miss you Hayley.
  4. Thank you to Kay Slater and the Inner Wheel
  5. Don’t forget the Days for Girls sewing afternoons, every 3rd Sunday at Alan Lane Building, 1 – 4 pm
Thought for the week:
Worrying won’t stop bad stuff from happening, it just stops you from enjoying the good.

Increase the number of Rotarians under 40 years by 5%pa
Women members increased by 5% pa

What do we mean by diversity?
It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along. the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.

I see Diversity in Membership as not only race and ethnicity etc but also about a cross section of vocations within our community.  Classification method.

SEE LIST

While the traditional method of inviting people to join a Rotary Club is to invite them, there are other ways of getting people interested or aware of Rotary.

We have tended to go away from the two-person interview/visit method to the come along and see what you think method.

People will become interested in an organisation or project if it has a high profile or if it constantly “in your face”

“Frank Walker from ………….
“It puts a rose in every cheek……………….
Who is Rose Batty?.....................................
Who is Adam Goodes?...............................
Who is Shane Warne?................................

So how do you sell Rotary when asked, “What’s Rotary all about?”

Do you say; Oh, we meet once a week and some have a meal, we enjoy each other company and we do projects in our community and sometimes overseas.

OR DO YOU SAY:

We meet on a regular basis to enjoy each other company and provide service to others through various service avenues means including
Leadership, personal growth and decision-making opportunities for young people,
Create an awareness that every vocation is an opportunity to service our community
To plant trees under which we may never sit
Sink wells to provide clean fresh water for those in developing countries
Provide low cost shelters for those in disaster areas,
And we, together with other world agencies, are eradicating Polio from the world.
Not to mention the good work through our Foundation.

Would you like to be part of that?

WHAT WAS IT THAT HELPED YOU DECIDE TO JOIN A ROTARY CLUB?

It’s clear that Membership Recruitment and Public Image should run hand in hand.

When we undertake projects or fundraisers, we should be telling the world constantly who we are with large banners, flyers, having our logo and motto proudly on display and in that way, we will become more widely known and people will know what we do.

IN SUMMARY:
1:      Selling Rotary is more than just making people aware of the brand.
2:      To Rotary Clubs, diversity relates to both cultural and vocational
3:      Prospective members should know what they are getting involved with
4:      People with embrace an organisation that has a high profile
5:      We sell ourselves by being enthusiastic and energetic
6:      Public Image and Membership Recruitment should run hand in hand.
