Rotarian discovers Antarctica
Our guest speaker and Mt Gambier East Rotarian Frank Mongers spoke to members about his trip to the frozen continent.
His journey started in Ushuaia, Argentina which claims the title of world's southernmost city. From there it was a 3 day 1400 km trip on a converted ice breaker to Adelaide Island off the Antarctica Peninsular.
There were 183 passengers and 130 staff on the ship. The accommodation & meals was first class. Once on the continent the adventure continued with Helicopter flights, zodiac rides and trekking. Interactions with the wild life including whales, seals and penguins was a highlight. Frank being a professional photographer showed stunning photos and videos of the icebergs and wildlife. Our Glenn Brotchie has also been to Antarctica (where hasn’t he been?) and was able to share some of his experiences there.

March 2nd is the 56th anniversary of Allan Bowes joining our Club in 1970. Allan has been an inspirational and devoted Rotarian and the Club is blessed in having him still as an active member.
A snippet from his history on CR:
“Following his retirement from the Warrnambool Shire Council in 1996, Alan
enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts at Deakin University at Geelong. As a result of his grades he was invited to study for his Honours and spent the following two years studying the Homesteads of the Western District, this was followed by a stint at Selwyn College at Cambridge University in the UK.
One of Alan's greatest loves is his farm at Glenthompson. He was one of the early environmentalists in that district and has planted thousands of trees to support the local wild life.
Alan has been Chairman and/or committee member of the following offices in our Club. Director for 9 terms; Vice President 3 terms; Bulletin Editor; Chairman Finance, 7 terms; Community Service, 7 terms; Chairman International; Chairman Public Relations, 3 terms; Youth Service; Chairman Public Relations, 3 terms; Chairman Club Service; Chairman Classification; Sergeant at Arms; Rotary Foundation; Attendance; Properties; Program; History and many more”
Former member Charlie Speed was farewelled at a funeral ceremony last Monday. He was an active member from 1971 to 2001 and held many positions within the Club in that time and is well known for his service to the community.
March is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene month on the Rotary Calendar. Tony recently shared photos of the water wells and water infrastructure that’s being built by locals as part of the Club’s PNG project.
The provision of accessible water is life changing for these villagers.
