Relay for Life
John Beks also reiterated the importance of Relay for Life and asked all "Why?"
John spoke passionately about some of his reasons for this incredible experience in his words, which were very personal and certainly brings home to us the shocking, heartbreaking impact of CANCER.
In Johns’ words ; -
"My family, like so many others, has been affected by the untimely, indiscriminate and usually very painful death of a family member! In some families, there is just the isolated case of CANCER; in others there appears to be a common gene. As far as I am able to trace back, I count 4 successive generations of MALE cancer victims in my family tree. A statistic not lost on me or my close surviving relatives!
HOW DO U THINK YOU WOULD FEEL???
My grandfather, whom I never got to know, died aged 76. My dad, also aged 76, went to heaven on the day the 1st man landed on the moon. I also lost our second brother, aged 67 (some of you may have known Adrian). 8 years ago I lost another brother, aged 79, and within 3 days his wife also died aged 72!
ALL CANCER VICTIMS
Only younger cynics will suggest that; they did not have a bad innings.
And exactly 1 year to the day, a nephew, who planned to continue sailing around the world, had his life cut short. Most of you may remember him as a guest speaker 2 years ago and he was only 63 years old - younger than many of you!!!!
And that fate is not reserved for the ageing or advanced - some 15 years ago yet another nephew lost his young wife aged 35, leaving him 3 very young boys losing their mother!
On my wife's side of the family at least 1 aunt died of cancer and 7 of her 13 children were similarly affected, and last week I attended the funeral of a friend’s family to farewell a young father of 2 - he was 36!!
Ten months ago we lost a valued club member in ROY SLATER!
SO do not wonder why I am so passionate about finding a cure for CANCER and supporting RELAY FOR LIFE. I have been to too many funerals – after a 3 year break, I once more make a similar appeal to Club Members’ for your support for RELAY FOR LIFE!
Ever since the origin of RELAY FOR LIFE in 2003 a variety of local community groups have teamed together to make a difference and in that time have raised almost $2 million, with our Rotary Club raising in excess of $14,000.
THIS COMING WEEKEND (Friday and Saturday) , once more, the Club has committed to an initial up-front donation of $1000. Our club BBQ is expected to off set the $25 registration per walker. All registered walkers please collect your shirt from RFL-HQ upon arrival and any members’ walking or not, if u wish to make a donation please write name and amount, on envelope and provide to Rotary by next weeks’ meeting. HAPPY WALKING TO ALL."
Polio Movie Night
Anne Adams thanked everyone for supporting the POLIO movie night. 42 tickets were sold which is the best contribution ever and all up $1200 was raised from over-all ticket sales which is fabulous, being the Centenary Year- a great contribution!
Tasty Plate Fundraiser
Tony and Joan Austin are holding a Fashion Parade on SUNDAY APRIL 2nd to raise funds for TASTY PLATE. Proceedings commence at 1.30pm for a 2 pm start and a great raffle with 1st prize being a beautiful quilt. Looking for donations for 2nd/3rd prizes and door/lucky entry-please see tony if you can help out!

John Hunt conducted the fines session with Tony, Mal, David Brown, Svet and Anne Adams being some of the lucky recipients
Footy Tipping
With footy season approaching, Brian has suggested a FOOTY TIPPING competition as a fun fundraiser-Brian is prepared to organise it & its suggested a $50 to participate & encouraging all members’, family & friends to participate – if we get 40 starters = $2000, winner gets $1000 and the club gets $1000. Expressions of interest to Brian please.
Past Exchange Student, Laura
Laura, a past exchange student from 2007\8 Switzerland, is arriving Sunday & hoping to catch up with everyone next Tuesday.
Rotary Peace Concert
Thursday 9th March, 7:15pm at Lighthouse Theatre.
Karina has tickets for this at $30 each. Please be ready with your money next Tuesday night when Karina will return with tickets in hand. It would be great to see a good turn-out from our club on this night to support Rotary Foundation Peace Scholarships. It was a fantastic evening last year so don't miss out.
