PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Svet opened the meeting and invited President Brian Trenery to welcome all Rotarians and the three visitors who were present - Julie Threfall-Ryan’s son Jack, and two female Rotary Exchange students Mathilde from Denmark and Axelle from France. Tim from Germany was playing soccer - which he is very good at - was an apology.

Father of the Year Breakfast
Brian spoke in very positive terms about the successful Father of the Year breakfast and thanked all involved, especially Ian Cairns for his passion with this project.

Change of Venue for the Mortlake Mental Health night
Brian also advised Rotarians that the Mental Health night being held in Mortlake on Wed 6 September 2016 has had a change of venue due to the huge response of people wishing to attend. The guest speaker will be Geoff Kennett.  The venue is no longer the Mortlake Golf Club house, the event is now being held in the Soldiers Memorial Hall and starts at 7pm.

Meeting on 13 September at Flagstaff Hill- visit from the DG Stephen Lamont
Brian reminded Rotarians that our meeting next week will take place at Pippies Restaurant. DG Stephen Lamont will meet with Board Members at 5pm. The meeting starts at 6pm and finger food will be served during the meeting. The cost is $22 per person and tea and coffee will cost an extra $4 per cup. Members pay for own drinks. Brian promised a lively night and encouraged Rotarians to bring partners and guests saying our new DG has a very relaxed style. Rotarians are asked to let Sharon know no later than Monday evening if you are attending, your guests or are an apology.

MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS
Father of the Year Breakfast
Ian spoke at length about the Father of The Year Breakfast and what a great response there has been from the public in relation to the winner. The Standard Newspaper has had members of the public call in with financial and other donations for the family whose story touched the community deeply.  It was noted that the Standard newspaper is now referring to it as the Warrnambool Rotary Club Father of the Year Award. In previous years it has simply been referred to as the Father of the Year Award. Ian spoke briefly about the story behind the award and the difficult challenges the family faced following the deaths of the girls parents. Ian thanked Louise, Jules and Karen for all their hard work with the event.

Show Gates Roster for 28, 29 and 30 October 2016
Doug Maclean advised that this will be his last year of coordinating the Show Gates roster as Mal Price is taking over for the 2017 Warrnambool Show. Doug asked Rotarians who were not available for the three days to let him know as soon as possible. As a starting point he will work off last year's roster so it is important to let him know your availability as soon as possible. Please email Doug on maclles126@gmail.com ASAP.

Robyn Blackmore
Robbie reminded all Rotarians that the next social outing is at Fig Sellers in Liebig Street on Saturday the 17 September at 10.30am for a coffee and get together.

Lift the Lid on Mental Illness - Friday 7 October

If anyone is planning on attending the Mental Health evening, organised by the Rotary Club of Mortlake, there has been a change of venue. The new venue is the Soldiers Memorial Hall, which is located on Shaw Street (the service road beside the Hamilton Highway) about 300 metres east of the roundabout. The change became necessary when booking numbers exceeded the number which is allowed in the Golf Club. All other arrangements are the same - Wednesday 7th September, 7.00 p.m. sharp start, gold coin donation (more if attendees wish), and a light supper afterwards.

Rotary Community Art Show - Friday 23 September: Opening night tickets $20. A great night out, so don't miss out. Contact Roger Cussen for tickets.

Coonawarra Trip - 8-9 October:  Still some vacant seats available – please see Judy.

GUEST SPEAKER - MATHILDE
Louise Keogh who is Mathilde's current host mother introduced Mathilde and her presentation. Mathilde, depite her nervousness, gave an excellent and interesting presentation about her home in Denmark and what she's been up to so far since her arrival in Warrnambool.
Mathilde is 16 years old and her birthday is on 24 October. Her family lives in Denmark, Nyborg. She attended a boarding school last year, and before that went to the Royal Ballet School in Odense for 6 years. Mathilde has lots of hobbies, but dancing and spending time with her family and friends is her absolute favourite hobby. Mathilde has danced for 7 years doing ballet and contemporary.
Mathilde's home in Nyborg is famous for being an old city for kings and royal people; its beaches and small restaurants; and the Nyborg slot, a famous castle. The population in Nyborg is 17,000 and Mathilde has lived there for 6 years and stated that the schools are good.

Mathilde's sister Camilla is 19 years old and just started her gap year after finishing sixth form of college in Nyborg. Her mother works as a Senior Manager at Lundbeck A/S in a department doing clinical research, and her father is an automation engineer at ABB A/S.
Mathilde talked about the differences between Australian schools and Danish Schools. The school system in Denmark is from year 0 until year 9 (mandatory); Gymnasiet (not mandatory) but a requirement for university, people aren't called Miss, Mrs, Mr, and there are no school uniforms. Oure Boarding School has 600 students who all specialise in sport and performance (dance, acting, football, biking, skiing, golf and music). They live in houses with 16 other people, both boys and girls. A normal day at Oure Boarding School: 5 periods a day (one period 50 minutes); dance every day (1 hour and 30 minutes); get up at 7:00 am; breakfast 7:15 am; school; lunch at 11:00 am; dance and back to school; dinner 6:45 pm; bedtime 10:30 pm.
Since arriving in Australia Mathilde has visited Tower Hill, Port Fairy and Flagstaff Hill. She has already made friends at school.
She is really excited about:
Learning to surf in the summer holidays
Leaning about the Australian culture and new experiences in the Warrnambool community
Her year abroad in Australia and hoping to get to know each Rotarian individually.
