Brian welcomed all the guests, and read out the Rotary club invocation, as transcribed below:
Our Youth Service recognises the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as
Rotaract,
Interact,
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards,
Rotary Youth Exchange, along with our involvement and commitment to ROTEX, National Youth Science Forums and the Science and Engineering Challenge.
So with our commitment to young people and service to others through the other four (4) Avenues of Service, would you stand and join with me and drinking a toast to the people of the various global communities we serve. “Global Communities.”
Club guest for the night was PDG Jane Cox, with members guests Margaret Ross and harry Price.
Meeting Introduction
- Welcome back Graham Ross and Robbie Blackmore
- Last Friday we said our farewells to PP Eric Williams, a respective member of our club for 45 years. Thank you to those who were able to attend his funeral, there was a good turnout of members to support his family and to say farewell.
- Some of you will remember the Rotary Friendship Exchange Team from Canada who were here recently and in particular, Carol Pelton. Carol took 3 months to tour the Australia before her 5 weeks tours of our District. She was in Melbourne when she fell ill and passed away in a Airport Hotel room . A sad end to a most successful exchange. We are helping her family with appropriate arrangements.
- There was another “Father of the Year” meeting this morning, we confirmed several matters in preparation for the distribution of entries to schools on 20th June. The Father of the Year breakfast is on Wednesday 28th August 7am.
- 30th May Daybreak Club is running another film night at the Capitol Cinema to raise money for Polio Plus. This movie also sounds good it is called Rocketman, a celebration of the life and times of Elton John. If it is as good as Bohemian Rhapsody, it will be great.
- Rotary Leadership Institute is running a series of days and the first and closest is Terang on 10th August 2019. RLI The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program. It seeks to provide quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills to Rotarians interested in developing their Rotary participation and to those identified by Rotary Clubs as having a potential in club leadership. Registration on line via the District web site.

Mal Price: Reminded members of the Vocational site visit next Tuesday at the Men’s shed, 21st May. The dinner menu will be floating around the tables for member input. Meet at Men’s shed at 6:15, meal will be at Allan Lane Pavillion.
Glenn Brotchie: Spoke on the progress of the Dinner Auction, with the ‘lotting’ process taking place this Saturday, 9:00 AM at the warehouse next to Harris Scarfe. We will need as many as we can get to assist. Also a reminder to members about providing goodies for the wheelbarrow raffle.
Andrea Sampson: Thanked Mal and Vicki for their hospitality earlier on. It was really a welcome function.
Stephen Giddens: Presented a plaque for work done for Emergency Services.
The club has said goodbye to Yanic at the last meeting. I, (Steve,) is the councilor for our next student if we go ahead with an exchange. The boy will be from Germany. Both Louise Brenna and I will be the host family for the first 3 months. I need back-up support from other club members for long term stays and short term stays, remembering that it is a club exchange, so get behind it.
George McLeod volunteered for long term, with others volunteering for short term.
Andrea Sampson: Spoke about the Boomerang Bags for the Dinner Auction. 45 are completed at moment. Also there will be work done agsin for the Days for Girls kits. There will be a working bee, 10AM to 1:00PM , at the SEAL Building in Hyland St.
Jane Cox PDG, :Reported on Rotary Health, and Brian Trenery, PDG, accepted a certificate on behalf of the club for assistance given to Rotary Health. Jane suggested to visit Rotary Health on the Website, to find out more on Rotary Health.
Judy Ross: Plugged the 5c jar swindle. $1 per guess. Remember monies raised go towards eliminating Polio. (As an aside Glenn has just finished reading a great book by Joan London, The Golden Age, about kids who had polio during the period after WW2 – highly recommended.)
Fines Session by Ian Cairns: Great to see he fined himself for his sojourns along the East Coast, plus many others.
Rachel Furnell: Introduced our RYLA participant, Harry Price, who gave an insight into the RYLA program and the benefits he obtained from the program. He went from being a sceptic to a believer.
Robbie Blackmore’s Swindle: $8 won by Marie Bennett. Good to see Graeme Ross back, who drew the lucky number.
Acting President Brian closed the meeting. There were 45 attendees, including 3 guests, with 7 apologies, 3 no meals, and only 1 absconder. He again thanked Graeme and Margaret Ross for being there.
