It has been another encouraging week for the Warrnambool Rotary Club, and I would like to thank everyone who continues to give their time, energy and good humour to our meetings, projects and community activities. Glad to hear the Booksale was great success last weekend raising $1595. Thank you to Kayla for organising the Trivia activity for this weeks meeting.

There were a large number of member announcements this week, so hopefully everyone has sent their announcements through to Glenn for inclusion in the bulletin.

We also extend a very warm welcome to Simon, our exchange student, who will be hosted by our club for the next 12 months. We look forward to getting to know Simon and supporting him throughout his time with us.
On a sadder note, we extend our sincere condolences to Chris on the loss of his dad. Our thoughts are with Chris and his family at this difficult time. We also acknowledge the sad news of the passing of past member Bunny Hinchliffe, and remember with appreciation Bunny’s connection to our club and the fellowship shared over the years.
I hope to see you at the Science and Engineering Challenge next Monday/Tuesday (don’t forget if you can spare some time Sunday afternoon to help set up that would be appreciated).

In 1922, US Rotarians organised an attendance contest; the challenge being that the losing clubs would join in giving the winning club a prize. The Rotary Club of New York City was declared the winner and was presented with a bell by Immediate Past President Arthur Chadwick, of the Rotary Club of London.
The bell had an interesting history. During WW it was used on the auxiliary warship Patrol No. 20. The bell was mounted on a frame made from the oak of Admiral Nelson's famous battleship HMS Victory.
Arthur expressed the hope that in its new field the bell might ever sound a clear ringing note of goodwill and symbolise to New York Rotary the friendship, fraternity and loving affection of their brother Rotarians in London. In responding for New York Rotary, Past President Raymond Knoeppel said that "Each league of the bell's progress on its last ocean voyage was cheered with the soft tinkling of its new message of the true brotherhood of Rotary".
Since then, the bell used in Rotary meetings came to represent
- as on ships - order, discipline and the time to guide members through their weekly Rotary meetings.
What has President Chris been up to:
Well, I’m back and ready for action. While it was a very short trip, it was very enjoyable and very relaxing. I can freely admit to not opening my computer for the entire 4 weeks, and I only connected to the internet once – I’d though I’d downloaded a couple of books to my kindle, but apparently was mistaken. A quick connection to the ‘Net and that was resolved.
At one stage, I spent 8 days completely out of range. No phone calls, no texts, no emails or anything – the only thing I looked at my phone for was to find out the time, not that I did that very often. It was incredibly refreshing and relaxing, not having that thing buzzing for attention multiple times per day. I highly recommend that everyone give it a try at some stage.
I didn’t take that many photos, but I did try taking some photos of the stars. I didn’t get that many chances as there were a lot of cloudy days, but here’s one that seems to have come out ok, plus one of a nice sunrise and another of the bight.

ROTARY JACKETS
Does anyone need to buy one of the fabulous reversible Rotary Jackets?
Brian has done some deep research on the matter. The company involved operates under the name of:
The problem at the moment is that we do not know the final price.
However Brian, (I assume) will take orders from members. The company needs to know some specifics: Quantity, Sizes, and specifics of what would be emblazoned onto the jacket.
Once this is known they would require a downpayment of 50% to start the production, with balance on successful delivery..
Some members already have these jackets, your editor included. They are great and put our club out there.
