Peace Symposium speaker urges world to spend more on education, less on war

Rotaract clubs receive awards for their innovative initiatives
A project launched by members of Rotaract in Uttar Pradesh, India, is liberating women who emptied dry toilets with their hands by teaching them skills that enable them to earn a living for their families. According to a 2012 report by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, Ghana has made great strides in providing its people with clean drinking water. But access to better sanitation has lagged. Two years ago, U.S. Rotary members in Maine set out to improve the education system in Bikaner, Rajasthan, an Indian city near the border of Pakistan. Enjoying calm winds and peaceful Pacific waters, Seung Jin Kim dove off his 43-foot sailboat, the Arapani, to swim with some dolphins nearby. MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Club Service: Eisteddfod

Rotarian Tony Austin, currently on a work party trip to PNG left a message of appreciation for all Rotarians who assisted with the recently completed Eisteddfod Speech section. Special thanks to Rotarian Ron Bishop who was particularly kind to one student who had become distressed after a performance, due to dropping and mixing up notes. Well done Ron.

Roster for the next section, Musical Performance, has been completed and emailed. Contact Rotarian Gordon Curran 556124 for any queries or changes.

Vocational Service

Rotarian Gordon Curran attended Warrnambool College Wave Alternative School for its recent open night and anti-crime expo. He commented that the school was most worthy of support as it assists young people from difficult family backgrounds who find regular schooling too socially and emotionally difficult to handle.

He also attended the Warrnambool & District Hospice fund raiser Four Funerals in One Day, featuring legendary Aussie actor and playwright Alan Hopgood, held at Brauer College auditorium. An information forum by SW Healthcare Palliative Care staff and Hospice in the Home leaders was most informative, but the highlight was the two young Brauer students who sang songs of love and loss so beautifully before the play commenced.

Rotarian Gordon encouraged members to look out for further fund raising events by Hospice in the Home, and to support them where possible.

Interviews for the annual Rotary TAFE Award will take place on Thursday next at the TAFE college. Six candidates will be interviewed by Rotarians Anne and Gordon from the Vocational Services committee.

Father of the Year

Ian Cairns encouraged those visiting schools this year to promote the event when they visit schools to drop off the application forms. Thanks to those Rotarians who volunteered to drop off forms at schools throughout the area.

President Elect Steve asked that the members start to consider a large local or international project for us to discuss in our planning meeting next week. He also asked that everyone try and be present to be part of this planning session and to support him as he starts his year as our president.

Finesmaster John Stuckey was ruthless in his first session as Finesmaster and fined everyone who attended the Auction, Ron Rauert who bid against him for the Standard advertising, Keith McLeod who bid against him for the TV Advertisement, Judy Ross for baked beans in the wheelbarrow, Gordon Curran for his politics, John Hunt for being away playing golf and bragging about beating his wife, all Carlton supporters, all those in the Education system, the Editor for forgetting Trevor Williams does fines, Isobel Siebel for travelling to Ballarat for a meeting and got the date wrong, Ian Cairns for road rage, Eric Williams for sitting too close to the bar and not hearing the speakers too clearly, and he even fined our guest for the night Darryl Twycross. Look out John, you're not on fines next week!!

GUEST SPEAKER - DARRYL TWYCROSS

Guest Speaker, introduced by Rotarian Doug Maclean was former club member Darryl Twycross of Darian Office and Art Supplies.

Darryl spoke on his Black Dog Round Australia motorbike ride as part of a quest to raise awareness and funds for depression services, and especially Lifeline’s on-line crisis support network.

Black Dog is an expression used to refer to severe depression, and toy black dogs are carried as mascots on each participating bike.

The ride covered 14,500 kilometers in 32 days. State rides ran concurrently with the round Australia event.

Great interest was created as the motorbikes thundered into the many communities visited, sometimes with a police escort.

Riders opted for low cost accommodation along the way, and paid around $8,000 each to cover their own costs, in addition to raising sponsorships. One rider raised $60,000 in sponsorships. Meals were provided by Lions clubs along the way.

Like most of the 66 riders, Darryl was motivated to take part by having family members with experience of depression. He showed a video of the trip, which was supported by the 9 Television Network

Around $1.5 million has been raised since the rides first began.

Chairman Doug congratulated Darryl on his achievement, a feat now recognised as an outstanding effort by those who heard his fascinating presentation.

ROTARY CLUB OF PORT FAIRY - TRIVIA NIGHT - 12 JUNE

As some Rotary Clubs are aware, particularly those in District Zone 5, the Rotary Club of Port Fairy has been actively involved in a project to help build a kindergarten / school for disadvantaged children in the village of Mto wa Mbu in Tanzania. A number of our members have recently returned from Tanzania after helping get the building project underway. This project has been, in part, funded by the Rotary Club in association with the Port Fairy Folk Festival Committee.

The building project has been arranged in conjunction with Seif Sakate who grew up in Mto wa Mbu but now lives with his wife, Catherine, in Port Fairy. Seif is obviously keen to help his childhood village develop and runs a number of programs to help raise funds for the children of the village.

Seif and Catherine have now organised a Trivia Night to help raise more fund for the kindergarten. Details are in the attached flyer and Rotarian are encouraged to help this cause and hopefully organise a table at the Trivia Night which is being held at the Star of the West Hotel in Port Fairy starting at 8pm on 12th June 2015. Tickets are $15 per person including a light supper.

IT'S NOT A BIRD. I could not resist sharing it. This parrot is in fact a female model who posed for Johannes Stötter, a fine art body painter. Using breathable paint, he spent hours painstakingly turning this woman into the image of a parrot,
brushstroke by brushstroke. The model's arm forms the parrot's head and beak, and her legs form the wing and tail feathers.
