WELCOME

Rotarian Ian Cairns opened the meeting by putting his arm in the air to attract everyone’s attention, and an opportunity to see who attended the scouting evening last week (arms in the air is a method adopted by scouting groups).

Ron Rauert was called upon for the Invocation and propose the Loyal Toast.

President Trevor Williams welcomed everyone to tonight’s meeting, noting we haven’t been to the Football Club in a few weeks.

The Warrnambool Football Club have called on Rotary for assistance to sell tickets at both the north and south end gates of the ground, which is an opportunity for us to raise money during the last 7 games of the season. Looking for volunteers 9.00 – 12.00 & 12.00 – 3.00pm, one person at each gate, commencing this Saturday. Following week 2/6 to be confirmed.

A menu is on the table, please tick the meals you would like on the menu and put a cross against the meals you don’t like.
Last week a meeting at the scout hall was well attended and great food.
Andrea brought the bin in for Foodshare tonight, looking for donations please.

EISTEDDFOD ROSTER - Terry O’Neill drew everyone’s attention to the roster on the table. The Eisteddfod will commence Monday 28^th May and continue until Thursday 31^st May. Please place your name against the timeslots if you can assist.

FOODSHARE - Andrea Sampson gave statistics for the past four months, currently donated 88kg of foodstuff. The 88kg equates to a considerable amount of money raised, and has assisted families in need post the SW fires. The foodbin is available at each meeting.

PNG PROJECT

Friend of Rotary – Joan Austin is involved with the PNG project and currently raising money to purchase text books and other materials to assist students in Papua New Guinea. Joan is requesting people donate $1.50 which goes a long way for PNG children in school.

(POST-MEETING NOTE: A significant number of donations were received by Tony at tonight's meeting with many donating far more than the $1.50 requested; there were many $10.00 and $5.00 donations. Joan now has $133.00 and some promises of more money. Joan believes as a result of this we may be able to send 1000 exercise books.)

GOODS & SERVICES AUCTION (June 9^th)

Michael reiterated tonight was the last night to bring auction items in, for storage purpose goods can now be taken to BBQ’s galore.

Robbie is selling tickets ($40 each for the dinner auction), think about getting tables together bearing in mind it is a long weekend. Friends and family may make other plans unless we book them for our event.

FAREWELL TO EXCHANGE STUDENT – BEN

Louise Keogh took Ben around last week to say goodbyes to everyone. Now he is safely home, Ben is not impressed he has grown so much and now towers over his older brother.

Warrnambool Central are running a raffle to be drawn at the end of the month.

GUEST SPEAKER - DANIEL SHEEHAN

Anne Adams Chairperson this evening; a privilege to introduce Daniel Sheehan tonight. Daniel grew up in the area, trained as a painter, however a trip to Canada was life changing event. Upon returning home completed a Conservation & Land Management Course at SW TAFE, and then an Applied Science Degree, majoring in Environmental Management in Ballarat.

Topic tonight - Raptors (to seize or grasp) of the coasts and farms, birds of prey. Many birds fall into this category;

Owls southern Boobook, disguised in old dead trees
Nankeen or Australian Kestrel
Brown Falcon have a strong curved beak excellent for hunting rabbits
It is hard to distinguish between a Swamp Harrier or a Falcon, nesting may occur in swamps.
Wedge Tailed Eagles, very strong beak, large impressive bird appearing to be the size of a German Shephard
White-Bellied Sea Eagle – often born inland on swamps, decreasing numbers
Peregrine Falcon, known as the world’s fastest bird, on observing take-off, it is at an exceptional speed

Recent fires in the South West, I have been helping on a farm and observed raptors use fire to produce food.

Our original owners of the land describe how Firehawks will pick up a stick which is alight and start a fire in another area to expose animals as a food source. A Black Kite flying above the fire may have started the fire?

CLOSING COMMENTS

SWINDLE $6 won by Pres. Trevor and will put the winnings to good use with the Papua New Guinea school books.
