PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Acting President Brian Trenery welcomed members and guests; Exchange Student - Mathilde, and Guest Speaker - Matt Stewart.

President Brian reminded members to check the Show gates Roster.

The Rotary club of Pakuranga (Auckland,N.Z) have organised a tour of New Zealand in March/April 2017 which includes Rotary events. The tour runs for 2 weeks and covers both Islands. Cost will be $4990 per person twin share, or $6490 single per person.The tour will take 30 people only and our Secretary has a detailed Itinerary.

Brian has received a report from Rotary Health. The report notes that a previous scholarship awardee, Dr. Bevan Main, from Melbourne University, was enabled to do a 3-year Doctoral study into Parkinsons Disease. Bevan is now working as a Post-Doctoral Scholar at Georgetown University in Washington. Our Hat Night raised funds for Rotary Health to support scholarships such as Dr. Bevan Main's.

MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS

BBQs

Tony Austin reported that helpers are required for a BBQ at Pontings on Thursday, 3^rdNovember from 7.15 to 10.30.

Also on Saturday, 5^th November from 1pm - 4pm to erect a marquee and work at a BBQ at Lake Pertobe in support of Walking Home, ‘walk against homelessness’. This will be a simple, free, Sausage Sizzle. No cash handling required.

Show Gates

Doug MacLean said that a revised Show gates roster has been completed. Please contact the Supervisor if you are unable to attend your rostered time-slot. Contact details are on the roster.

Exchange Student

Exchange student Mathilde Jacobsen thanked members for looking after her since her arrival in this country. She now goes to Rotary Central.

FINES

John Hunt's fine session included fines for: Michael Boyd, a participant in the Rotarian cricket carnival in Wagga; Jules Threfell-Ryan for her birthday party on turning 50, and attendees there; Others who celebrated a birthday; and Steve Giddens for a demo of putting out hay bale fires.

ROBBIE'S SWINDLE

Ron Rauert won a chance to draw the Ace and did so, winning $97. Congratulations Ron!

NEXT WEEK'S MEETING

Terry O’Neill announced that next week’s meeting will be held at Wangoom Hall and will include a $5 sweep on the big race.

GUEST SPEAKER, MATTY STEWART - STANDING TALL

Chairperson Jules introduced Matty Stewart from Standing Tall, a mentoring program conducted at Brauer and Warrnambool College for years 7 & 9. Mentor have contact with a student for 1 hour a week in various activities to encourage healthy development. Matt explained the program which now involves 50 students. He said more students could participate if more mentors were available.

While not ever mentoring relationship is successful there have been many successes. Students now ask if they can join the program.

Dennis Napthine is the program’s Ambassador, and it is expected that Emmanuel College will also join.

People can apply to be mentors and, if accepted, receive training and are then matched up to a student. Hamilton and Heywood schools are using ‘Standing Tall’ also and there have been inquiries from far and wide about the program.

Matt answered quite a number of questions from interested members.

Louise Keogh then spoke about Rypen, a Rotary initiative, which may be of value to the students involved in Standing Tall. Rypen teaches life skills to the participants, amongst other things.

Acting President Brian thanked Matt for his explanation of the program, and presented him with the usual certificate.

A RIDDLE FOR MELBOURNE CUP WEEK

One day a really rich old man with two sons died. In his will he said that he would give one of his sons all of his fortune. He gave each of his sons a horse and said they would compete in a horse race from Los Angeles to Sacramento, but the son whose horse came in second would get the money. So one day they started the race. After one whole day they had only ridden one mile. At night they decided they should stop at a hotel.
While they were booking in they told their problem to the wise old clerk, who made a suggestion. The next day the two brothers rode as fast as they could. What did the clerk suggest that they do?

In keeping with this riddle, the second person to send the correct answer to the editor, Karina Wood, will receive a prize.
