Our guest speaker is our own Sharon Kenny, a highly qualified manager of services for those affected by family violence.
“Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects individuals, families and communituies across the globe. It involves a pattern of abusive behaviour in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can tale many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, economic, and psychological abuse”
Family violence was not recognised as a crime until 1975, and before this there were no dedicated services or support for victim survivors.
Sharon noted that there is an increase in domestic violence after the birth of a child. Also of note is the prevalence of misogynistic views among boys and young men due to social media influencers. Sharon spoke of the services now available for perpetrators and victims at Brophy.
