Gerrie introduced our guest speaker Sr Rose Glennon.

 

Introduction: Sr Rose Glennon

Rose Marie Glennon give us her recollections of being the first lady in our Rotary Club.
"Rose" grew up in the fertile region of Dalvui Lane in Noorat, one of the 15 children to Con
and Maggie Glennon, growing up in a house with 4 rooms, last year's family reunion was
attended by their 6 surviving children and 76 grandchildren.

Rose chose to join the Sisters of Mercy Ballarat Order, studied and has an extensive list of
credentials. (TPTC, BSEd, BTheol, Grad Dip Ed (Pastoral Care), Grad Dip Ed (Admin), MACE).

Following 3 years as principal of St. Ann's College, in 1991 Rose was appointed for a further
3-year term as principal of Emmanuel College, following amalgamation with Christian
Brothers College. Very much a no-nonsense, hands-on, understanding kind of leader, who
can take much credit for the smooth transition of the two Colleges.

As covered at last week's meeting, - after some debate! - Rose became the first female
member of our Rotary Club.

Rose enjoyed her time at the Club. “I benefitted greatly from meeting the Rotarians and
enjoyed their company, their broad experience of many facets of life, the breadth of the
presentations and so much more. I did enjoy working with members and their
companionship not only at meetings but also at events that took place. I remember well
joining the Saturday morning newspaper packing and I think I surprised some by coming,
but once again felt welcome. The biggest surprises I believe came from outside the club. I
remember well the experience of being on the gate at the Warrnambool show and a lady
refusing to buy a ticket from me because she wanted a male Rotarian. Another
disappointment was with some of the people I picked up for the annual Christmas party.
Some of the people I picked up missed the opportunity to be taken out by a man - a woman
Rotarian was quite a dampener on their night out.”

At the end of 1993, after a short period in Ballarat, until recently Rose worked at Centacare
in the Northern Territory, her ministry involving work with mission facilitation and
administration. Rose’s interest in first Australian’s evolved from a long-standing concern for
aboriginal people who made up one-third of Centacare’s workforce.

 

Recently retired to the south west region, Rose joined us tonight with much reminiscing
taking place amongst members who clearly remember the transition from an all male club
to welcoming female members.

 

 

President Michael finished with a thank you to our guests and a thought for the week
‘Dont take life too seriously, you will never get out alive’.

 

 

World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to
commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a
vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and
subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin,
led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in
1988. As of 2013, GPEI had reduced polio worldwide by 99%.

For the last three decades, Rotary International and our members have
worked with the global health community and our partners in the Global Polio
Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to rid the world of polio. When the partnership
began in 1988, there were more than 350,000 cases of polio. By 2017, that
number had dropped to 22. The international community recognizes 24
October as World Polio Day. The day highlights the world’s progress toward
polio eradication and focuses attention on the final efforts to get there. To
honour the day, Rotary hosts a livestream event where top experts provide a
global status update on polio, international celebrities share personal stories
and inspire viewers to get involved in polio eradication, and GPEI leaders
discuss the impact of the partnership. Along with the livestream event, Rotary
clubs around the world host thousands of events to commemorate the day
and continue the fight to end polio.

Rotary will also stream the event in French, German, Italian, Japanese,
Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. 

This year’s event will be livestreamed from the College of Physicians of
Philadelphia, known as the birthplace of American medicine.

General Meeting and election of office bearers will be held during the Club’s meeting
scheduled for Tuesday 13 November, 2018. Prior to the AGM the Club will be seeking
nominations to fill vacancies of President-Elect 2020-2021; Vice-President 2019-2020;
Secretary 2019-2020; Treasurer 2019-2020, and 8 vacancies of Director 2019-2020.
Nomination Forms are available from President Michael Boyd, President Elect David
