Report for Rotary Meeting 28/5/19

Sergeant at Arms Ian Cairns opened the meeting and invited Marie Bennett to deliver the Invocation and Loyal Toast.

Welcomed everyone especially our Club guests Mark Opie and Marlee from People’s Choice Credit Union and visiting Rotarians Wilma Gibson (Broken Hill RC), Steve Bellamy, Mary Bouman and Ian Watson from Daybreak RC along with Club guests Margaret Ross, Leanne Williams and Phillip Ross.

Meeting Introduction

I bring you greetings from China, an industrious country that seems to be growing too fast. Shanghai is a city with the population of Australia (26 million) and there are 1.4 billion people in China. Sharon and I had a great time and enjoyed out trip away.
The Dinner Auction is fast approaching and I would like to thank Glenn and his committee for making it all happen. We have good support from the Special Development School, the major beneficiary from the auction this year. Check with Robbie to finalise numbers – we must nominate final numbers tomorrow.
Thanks to all the members who completed their collections by May 5^th, the due date – we are all busy but those completed their task on time have made it much easier for Glenn to manage the data and the booklet is being printed now.
Our Changeover dinner is in 3 weeks, 18^th June and dates for other dinners have been published in the Bulletin. Club members are encouraged to represent our club at these meetings.
Make sure you let Anne know if you can help with the Science and Engineering Challenge on 21^st June.
Congratulations to Gerry Delaney for organising the Robbie Burns Dinner last weekend. Gerry did an enormous amount of time and effort to arrange a terrific dinner that was purchased at last year’s dinner auction. Gerry has also taken on the role of Secretary in Sharon’s absence. Thank you Gerry for your contribution to the club.
Volunteer hours for the year – over 5000 hours contributed to our community (100 per week) without counting meetings.

Member Announcements

Steve Bellamy (Daybreak RC) – Thank you to Michael for his ongoing welcoming involvement for our club with the PNG project. We have been involved for the past 2 years and are very happy to support it. Daybreak have contributed $9000 over the past 2 years and tonight presented a cheque to Tony Austin for $3000.

Ian Cairns – Father of the Year – Are proud to announce that they still have the same three major sponsors (11 years now). South West Credit Union, Bunnings and 3YB Coast FM.

Trevor Williams – Footy Gates – Thanks to Judy, Robbie, Terry, Paul and Keith. Next date is 8/6/19, please let Trevor know if you can help out.

Duncan Stalker – All the details of Harold Balding (Past WRC president) and his commitment to the Armed Services have been added to the War Memorial at the RSL and a paver will also be placed in his name. Thank you to Duncan for making this happen so quickly and to Ian Sharman sharing his research into Harold Balding and his contributions to our great country.

Judy Ross – 5c jar – last night tonight for any guesses.

Anne Adams – Vocational Service Urban/Rural night meeting of those interested after tonights’ meeting please. Next date is July 9^th.

Andrea Sampson – Will have 100 Boomerang bags completed for the Dinner Auction (an amazing effort and contribution to the night). Huge thanks to Gerry for the Robbie Burns Dinner – 6hours of magnificence. A big welcome back to Bunny after her health challenges in the past couple of months.

Mal Price – Thank you to those who attended our Vocational visit to the Men’s Shed. They have likeness to Rotary with their Fellowship, Friendship and Service to the community. If you get a minute try to visit the Pop-up shop in the old Lifeline building on Raglan Pde. It is a great display of some of their crafts.

Glenn Brotchie – Looking forward to a great night and thank you to everyone for their support. Still after items for the Wheelbarrow raffle if you can help out please.

Program – Financial Traps for Seniors

Mark Opie (Marlee unfortunately had to leave to attend to family) presented information to us that mostly covered financial planning in relation to Aged Care. The emphasis was squarely on making sure we plan ahead and are well informed to make good decision ahead of time, rather than at the time of need, when there is a higher degree of emotional involvement that might cloud our decisions. There are many different options and scenarios that will vary considerably depending on financial status, personal wishes and family considerations. He recommended we visit the My Aged Care website – https://www.myagedcare.gov.au/

and use the tools and advice there to begin having a look at what this might mean for each of us as we live longer but all reach a time when these considerations are very important.
