CHANGEOVER LUNCHEON

Sunday 3rd July brought our club together to celebrate our Annual Changeover Dinner in which we acknowledged the hard work of President Steve Giddens and the executive committee of 2015/16.

The meeting was opened by President Steve Giddens who welcomed official guests, honorary members and all present. Apologies were noted from Cr Colin Ryan (Mayor - Moyne Shire), the Rotary Club of Camperdown, and District Governor Stephen Lamont.

Cr Kylie Gaston (Mayor - Warrnambool City Council) brought a message of welcome in which she spoke of the impact of Rotary though out the community. Cr Gaston gave recognition of the work of Rotary and the immeasurable value of the volunteer work of Rotary Clubs throughout the city. "On behalf of the Warrnambool City Council," she said, "Thank you. We appreciate what you do.We would not be the same community without you. Thank you very much."

Roma Britnell, MLA (Member for South-West Coast) also brought a greeting. Echoing the message of Cr Gaston, Ms Britnell also spoke of the value of Rotary to the community. "One of my greatest impressions so far as a new politician in this community is how valuable the works of volunteers is in our community. To have this volunteerism in our community gives me enormous pride in being your representatives, but it's you who make it an awesome community," said Ms Britnell.

"I stand here in awe of you all, I congratulate you all and thank you for all you do for our community."

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

My Rotary Presidential Year 2015-16

I started the year with a Sunday lunch for changeover, this was mainly to make sure my invited guests could make it; DG Jane Cox, my fiancé, my brother and his partner, and some good friends not living in Warrnambool.

Firstly I would like to thank my hard working board. Without their assistance I would not have fulfilled my goals. I wanted to concentrate on two areas; having a bit of fun and gaining new members. I’m pleased to say we have inducted 8 new members and had a lot of fun.

Our two spinning wheels have paid for themselves and more, so now, with this asset, funds will be put to good use on projects both local and international.

I appointed Judy Ross to be our Fun Director. With this Judy has incorporated some great outings which I’m sure everyone enjoyed:

Saturday bus trip around strawberry farm, cheese, chocolate and winery and lunch at Timboon Rail brewery.
Melbourne Cup evening at Wangoom
Christmas dinner
Australia Day gathering at Botanical Gardens

Our Tuesday evening meetings continue to be a mix of fellowship and informative sessions.

Fundraising for Siri Village project, thanks to Graeme & Margaret Ross for opening up their home.
Youth Achievement Awards for Moyne & Warrnambool Council.

We have had the pleasure of Miss Karla Bracklow from Germany as our exchange student. Karla has taken every opportunity to get involved with the club and learnt many new skills during her time with us.

Sarah Forbes and Carly McDonald have been successful in gaining a position with the District Youth Exchange program, going to France and Switzerland respectively. It has been wonderful meeting the girls and their families and we wish them all the best in their preparation for 2017. Thank you to Rachel Furnell for heading up our Youth Portfolio.

Along with all this I’ve been kept busy, with my fiancé Louise Brennan, at Nine Youth Exchange Committee functions. One in particular was being part of the goodbye party at Melbourne Airport to see Ryan Keogh, the Clubs outbound student, off to Finland.

Thank you to Doug Maclean for stepping in as coordinator of Programs after Gordon Curran’s retirement. We have had a variety of guest speakers and visits to local organisations.

Thank you to our Sergeant, Andrea Sampson, and fines masters, John Stuckey, Trevor Williams and Ian Cairns, without you our meetings would not be as lively.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW AWARD

Secretary Anne Adams introduced Past President Michael Boyd to President Steve Giddens, Rotarians and guests.

Michael was first inducted into the Rotary Club of Bendigo in 1991 where he was a member for 5 years. During that 5 years he was Community Service director for 2 years, a committed committee member of Rotary Club of Bendigo Easter Art Show, and a memeber of the RC Bendigo Youth Camp Committee.

Michael was inducted into Rotary Club of Warrnamboool on 18 July, 1995 remaining with the club until 2011, during which time he held a number of committee and board positions including Club President 1998/99, Chairman of the 444,000 (500,000) Trees Project 1999/2001, Chairman Community Service Committee 2002/3, Chairman RYLA Committee 2009/10, Chairman Fellowship Committee 2009/10.

In 2011 Michael moved to Mackay where he joined the Rotary Club of Mackay until 2013 where he held the position of Club Treasurer.

On October 8th 2013 Michael rejoined this club and since that time he has chaired the fundraising and dinner auction committees, chaired the Club Service Committee and has been Treasurer for the last year.

Anne commended Past President Michael Boyd to the club as a proactive and enthusiastic Rotarian. "Today, Michael, we want to recognise your service to Rotary, to say 'Thank you', and to wish you many more years of fulfilling Rotary Service.

Past President Michael Boyd was received by President Steve Giddens and presented with the award, Paul Harris Fellow.

The Club congratulates Michael on this distinguished award.

Assistant District Governor Janey Preston acknowledged the service of President Steve Giddens with the presentation of the Past Presidents badge.

In awarding President Steve the Past Presidents badge ADG Janey Preston acknowledged the good work that Steve has done in his year as president and acknowledged his willingness to continue in this role for the coming year with the support of a special leadership team including PP Anne Adams, PP Judy Ross, PDG Brian Trenery, PP John Hunt, President Elect Trevor Williams.

The final formality of the afternoon was the presentation of the Board Members for the 2016/7 Rotary year. It is great to see new club members taking responsibility as Committee Chairpersons and we thank all Board Members for their commitment to the club and their willingness to take on these responsibilities. We wish you all well in your respective committees and look forward to another great Rotary year.
