Fireproof Paint
40 lbs powdered asbestos, 10 lbs of aluminate of soda, 10 lbs of lime, 30 lbs of silicate of soda. Use any non resinous colouring pigments. Mix thoroughly with water. Use at least 2 coats on wooden surface.
 
Foamy Tooth Powders
5 ozs precipitated chalk, 1 oz sodium bicarbonate, 3/4 oz powdered soap, flavour as desired. (Note: be sure to use powdered soap and not soap powder).
 
Fly Killers
This poison is harmless to humans, but deadly to flies. 1,000 parts of quassia, 150 parts of molasses, 50 parts alcohol, 5750 parts water. (Quassia is used in medicine - obtained from tropical trees). Macerate the quassia in 500 parts of water for 24 hours, boil for half an hour and press out the liquid. Mix this with the molasses, and evaporate to 200 parts. Add the alcohol and the remaining 750 parts of water. To use, saturate absorbent paper with it, and set out on a plate with a little water. The flies are attracted to it and die after drinking the liquid.
