MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS

 
Steve Giddens advised that he has been investigating placing Rotary shields up on the walls of the Warrnambool Football Club, namely those of Paul Harris Fellows and Exchange Students. The Football Club will be undergoing renovations and have advised that they will be giving consideration as to where these shields can be placed and as soon as they get the go-ahead will put them up for us. In the meantime, work needs to be done on updating and tidying up the shields.
 
Michael Boyd reminded Rotarians about three items:
  1. This is the first time in his 62 years that he has grown porridge on his lip and was doing this to raise awareness and funds for Men's Health. Rotarians were encouraged to support this worthy cause with a donation directly to Michael or via the Movember web site.
  2. There will be an "Auction Committee" meeting following next week's meeting. Anyone who is interested in being involved in organising this major fund raising event is welcome to attend. With Christmas coming up, this might be a good time for Rotarians to think about who we could approach for a donation.
  3. The Port Fairy Folk Festival is on 7, 8, and 9 March next year and numbers will be needed to assist by donating 10 hours of work over the weekend. This entitles the person to have free entry to the event over the entire three days. So pencil these dates into your diary.
White Ribbon Day
Ian Cairns reminded Rotarians that today was White Ribbon Day and to look out for the ribbons wrapped around trees on Liebig Street and Raglan Parade. 21 sponsors, including RCW sponsored one of these ribbons. Ian encouraged Rotarians to purchase a ribbon and to sign the oath which is:
to never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women  
 
Vocational Services chair Gordon Curran spoke briefly on the disappearance of some traditional occupations as a consequence of technological change and a move to multi-skilling, or combining several once separate occupations into one. As an example he highlighted a move to replace press photographers with the 
combined position of reporter/photographer, resulting in some major newspaper chains no longer employing specialist press photographers. Gordon commended the excellent young team of press photographers at the Warrnambool Standard, especially for their community, schools, and sport pics and displayed a magnificent framed enlargement of one taken by the Standard's Damian White, of Brauer College school captains Summer Medley and  Jeremy Bolden on Remembrance Day this year, gifted to the school on behalf of the club.
