"Warrnambool's Moyjil Site - evidence of early Australians?

Chairman:  Alan Bowes

The Moyjil headland has been the subject of a long research project (>12years) investigating an unusual collection of shells, burnt stones and charcoal that resembles a human occupation site. The site also shows some properties of sea bird middens. The great age of the site (120,000 years) makes it essential to distinguish between these two possibilities for its origin. If human it doubles the known period of human occupation of the continent. While the human evidence is strong it is not conclusive and a second phase of research, co-jointly with Traditional Owners and an international expert is planned for later this year.
