Rotarian, Dr Glenn Howell BScOptom, GCOcTher (Melb), GCOptom (UNSW), FACO. is a highly qualified therapeutic and behavioural optometrist with comprehensive clinical credentials. His background spans general optometry, advanced ocular therapeutics, aviation safety, and specialised neuro-optometric and children's vision training.

Over the past 15 years Glenn has obtained a number of qualifications that enable him to practice behavioural optometry, a specialised field that examines how the brain, eyes, and body collaborate to process visual information. Moving beyond standard eye tests that only check basic visual acuity, this holistic approach allows him to assess complex, functional visual skills like eye tracking, team coordination, and focusing flexibility.

These advanced capabilities are particularly beneficial for school-aged children struggling with reading or attention, adults experiencing severe screen-induced eye strain, and individuals recovering from neurological events like concussions or strokes.

To correct these underlying processing issues, Glenn builds tailored treatment plans that often involve specialised prescription lenses, therapeutic prisms, or structured vision therapy exercises designed to retrain and restore the visual system.

In his presentation Glenn provided us with a few examples of the sort of tasks required to highlight the many complexities of visual processing and binocular function, demonstrating how interactive exercises can isolate specific visual skills beyond basic sight clarity.

Glenn touched on visual information processing puzzles that evaluate visual memory, spatial speed, and hand-eye coordination, alongside specialized target-tracking tasks used to assess how much a disrupted eye-brain pathway causes dizziness following a stroke or concussion.

Ultimately, these practical examples emphasized how targeted vision therapy and tailored lenses can retrain the visual system to dramatically improve daily learning, comfort, and neurological recovery.

President Meg thanked Glenn for his interesting and informative presentation, noting that it was a great example of the value of Rotarians sharing their professional knowledge and experience with fellow members and helping us learn more about the diverse skills and expertise within our Club.
