International Service Committee

The Rotary Club of Ballarat West has a strong International Service Committee, with in particular an involvement in the health sector in Tonga

This program began with the supply of surplus ICU equipment in 1992, and this quickly led to the development of an innovative Twinning Program between the Vaiola Hospital in Tonga, and St John of God Hospital in Ballarat. This Twinning Program has continued since that time, so is, at the end of 2007, about to celebrate the 15th year of its existence. This project is supported financially by AusAID, the Australian Government Aid agency, but is involved intimately as well with Rotary services.

The most important of other local involvement at present is the Dental project, which has been running since 1996. It annual team of up to 19 RAWCS volunteers has expanded its brief from dental projects to more widespread health and social support programs.

The Rotary Club of Ballarat West has also a very significant involvement in Interplast, which delivers plastic and reconstructive surgical services to our near neighbours, but more recently has become involved in significant teaching programs in larger health systems up into Asia and Africa.
