Leather to Heather September 21,2008

The First Annual Leather to Heather Tournament is now in the history books as a success. We raised over $24,000 for the Aaron Lillie Trust Fund. This young man had a tragic diving accident this summer and is now paralyzed from the chest down. It is early in the process - so we continue to hope for a significant recovery. With hole sponsors on all 18 holes and fun competitions on each - it was a day filled with laughter and challenging golf. With Scotch tasting at the turn, everyone was a winner at this point. When we came back into the clubhouse, it was set with roving Rotarians and friends serving generous portions of Haggis and listening to wonderful classic guitar from Rob Wainwright who donated his time to soothe the frayed golfing nerves. Then it was into the dinner complete with Scotch Eggs. Right into the auction, Jim Fife picked some pockets for over $13,000 in additional funds for items such as a Day of Sail on Georgian Bay to golf at some of the best courses in Ontario. The winners of the competition were Rotarian Terry Nichols and his team of Jeff (Terry taught him all he knows) Nicholls, Ray Reuger and Jeff (one e two fs) Hobley. There are pictures of these lads slugging their trophies about - seems there is liquid spilled into them somehow!! By this time, we had an estimate on the proceeds from the evening, so we were able to invite Aaron's parents Shawn and Kevin Lillie to receive a cheque for $24,000 from the club and community to kick-off the fundraising for their son's recovery process. The Grand Prize Give-Away of a trip for 2 to Scotland was then the finale. After playing a fantasy game of golf with the crowd, Rotarian Angela Wilton was left standing with the lowest score - and the tickets to Scotland.
