Our membership is comprised of active and committed individuals bound together through fellowship and purpose.
The mission of The Rotary Club of Pender Harbour is to provide service to others both within our community and internationally, promote high ethical standards, advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
Fundraisers
As a quick list of our fund raisers, we have a whisky tasting in November/December (cold winter nights) complete with premium scotches and an abundance of excellent food. April Tools we do a BBQ at the boat building contest and subsequent boat race at Millenium Park in Madeira Park’s harbour. In June we have a wine tasting with selected wines and food pairings, each time picking a different country or theme.
We build, sell and donate picnic tables in our community.
Our major fund raisers are an antique car show in August, the “Show and Shine” and Calendar Sales in December. Throughout the year we are raising money for the Polio Plus campaign for the eradication of polio worldwide.
Our on-line fundraiser Rotary Rocks 50/50 Draw is used to support a number of groups in the harbour, school lunch programs and the food bank.
Projects
We fund various projects with our money and our key focus locally has been youth and community. Our calendar sales are dedicated to youth leadership training, called Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly (RYLA) and bursaries for Grade 12 graduates.
In 2011 we embarked on a herring enhancement project after a presentation by the Squamish Streamkeepers who discovered that herring liked to lay their eggs on the relatively smooth surface of creosoted pilings which killed the eggs. By providing an alternative, weighted landscape fabric, we have achieved an almost 100% hatch rate. If we are successful in increasing the herring population then the food chain for salmon, seals, porpoises will be enhanced. We are thankful for the support of Fisheries Canada and many members of the local community.
We have put up signs, and placed benches and garbage cans along Garden Bay Lake, placed picnic tables in Garden Bay Marine Park, John Daly Park and at the Elementary School, built a salmon viewing platform at John Daly Park and built a picnic shelter in Hospital Bay. We rebuilt the dinghy dock at the Garden Bay Marine park. We installed a waterline at the Forest View Cemetery and also put up a memorial stone. We have installed a story book walk in Tyner park and have provide substantial funding and support for the replacement of the outdated community school building.
We supported the "Spreading Kindness" Fundraiser prior to Christmas with online fundraising opportunities and a Rotary grant.
We have sponsored exchange students with a student from Pender Harbour spending a year hosted by a Rotary Club in another country while we host a foreign student here. Students at our high school get to meet and interact with someone from a different culture, broadening their perspective.
We support Rotary International in the fight against Polio. Since 1985 when the campaign started Rotary has raised over one billion dollars in the world wide fight.
We provided funding support for a project in Uganda, which provided a means to produce and distribute sanitary products in the region.
We recently provided funding to the Amorak Society in Bangladesh "Mothers Teaching Mothers" to help children receive an education in this poorest of poor country and now have an ongoing fundraiser to support this project by selling puzzles.
Current Projects
Our current project will install a concrete base and Memorial Stone at the Forest View Cemetery.
We are supporting the PH Community School Society in their quest to replace their present 50 year old building due to lack of water, toilet facilities and deteriorating structure
We are hoping to help PHSS with funding for their graduation as they have been unable to fundraise due to COVID, except for small bottle drives..
We are hoping to help the PH Reading centre purchase books over the next year.
