"Powerful," "motivating," and "results-oriented" . . .

[These] are just a few of the ways Rotarians are describing the 2008-09 theme, Make Dreams Real.

One of the dreams that RI President Dong Kurn Lee most wants to turn into reality is a longer and healthier life for the world's children. Citing the disturbing statistic that 26,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable causes, Lee is urging Rotarians to use the 2008-09 service emphases of water, health and hunger, and literacy to give children a chance at a better future.

Acknowledging that Rotarians cannot do everything, Lee said, "We must understand that saving one life is infinitely better than saving none . . ."

The RI president encouraged Rotarians to carry out projects that provide clean water and sanitation facilities, basic medicines and vaccines, and such simple solutions as mosquito nets and rehydration salts.

Calling for Rotarians to continue their work in literacy and education . . . , [Lee] said: "In 2008-09, we will Make Dreams Real by making sure that more children have a chance to go to school, because it will only be through education that the deadly cycle of poverty can be broken."
