Haitian Earthquake Relief

The Rotary Club of Pender Harbour has sent five ShelterBoxes for the relief of the peoples of Haiti, at a total cost of $5,000.

Each ShelterBox contains a tent, bedding, dehydrated food, water, water purification tablets, first aid kit, cooking utensils, and stove; the box itself will act as a container for water storage. Each box will sustain 10 people for a month.

So far Rotary International has shipped in excess of 700 ShelterBoxes with further funds coming in to ship several thousand more. There is a great need for immediate shelter, water, and food for the millions of Haitians who are in such dire need. Also 100 percent of all contributions goes to the relief; none is used for administration.

The first full container load of ShelterBoxes has been shipped by air and will be in use immediately. The distribution is being handled by the Haitian Rotary Clubs with the assistance of the Rotary Clubs in the Dominican Republic and in Jamaica.

The Rotary motto "Service Above Self" conveys the humanitarian spirit of the organization's more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.
