Community Rallies for Railway Avenue Families After Devastating Fire - Donate

On a quiet afternoon in Parry Sound, a fire broke out in a six-unit apartment building on Railway Avenue, forcing three families from their homes. While social services are stepping in to help, it’s clear that immediate needs — from housing to basic essentials — couldn’t wait. That’s why the Rotary Club of West Parry Sound acted swiftly.

This week, each displaced family received a $750 cheque thanks to the fast launch of a GoFundMe campaign by Rotary. “It’s not enough to raise money — it has to be available when it’s needed,” said a Rotary representative. “That’s why we moved quickly, so these families could begin to rebuild their lives now, not weeks from now.”

The damage was severe — one apartment was destroyed by flames, while smoke and water impacted the units below. The families, including a child with autism, a heroic 12-year-old who saved lives and pets, and a young couple with two dogs, are now facing at least three months of displacement while repairs and rebuilding begin.

As Rotary President Rick Cain handed cheques to tenants in front of the damaged building, the mood was heavy but hopeful. One recipient, holding the cheque with his son, said, “This helps us breathe. It gives us time to think about our next steps.”

While programs like emergency housing and social assistance provide critical support, they often don’t cover urgent gaps — such as pet care, children’s activities to escape hotel rooms, or replacing lost essentials.

The GoFundMe page — already gaining traction — will continue collecting donations toward the $15,000 goal. The Rotary Club is working closely with the families to ensure that funds are distributed transparently and responsively.

In times of crisis, community makes the difference. Parry Sound has shown once again that when neighbours are in need, compassion takes the lead.
