The Next Step Up: Restoring Mobility, Rebuilding Lives

 

Andrés Briceño’s journey is one of resilience, belonging, and purpose. As a Venezuelan immigrant, he arrived in Texas seeking a fresh start but soon found a second family within Rotary. However, his life took an unexpected turn when a devastating car accident left him in a coma for two weeks. When he woke, his world had changed—his injuries required months of recovery, and the simplest tasks became enormous challenges.

Despite the hardships, Andrés was never alone. His Rotary family, particularly members of the Rotary Club of The Woodlands, stood by him and his mother, offering emotional, logistical, and financial support throughout his hospitalization and rehabilitation. They provided him with mobility assistance devices—first a wheelchair, then a walker, and finally a cane—as he fought to regain his independence. Even before he could walk again, they organized a fundraiser to help cover his therapy costs, ensuring he had access to the care he needed.

Beyond the physical recovery, Rotary reinforced Andrés’ belief in community and service. Having established the Rotaract Club of The Woodlands just days before his accident, he saw firsthand the power of mutual support when his fellow Rotarians visited daily, kept his mother company, and even celebrated her birthday in the ICU waiting room. Their presence reminded him that he wasn’t just overcoming a personal challenge—he was part of something bigger.

As he regained strength, Andrés set ambitious new goals. He returned to college, studying political science with hopes of earning a master’s degree in economics. His ultimate vision is to return to Venezuela and contribute to rebuilding his homeland. In the meantime, he seeks nonprofit work in the U.S., continuing his lifelong mission of helping others.

His experience directly inspired the creation of The Next Step, a service project dedicated to helping others navigate physical recovery after life-altering injuries. Just as Rotary had stood by him in his darkest moments, he now seeks to provide mobility assistance, emotional support, and community connection for individuals facing similar challenges. With a focus on resilience, empowerment, and practical aid—including wheelchairs, prosthetics, walkers, and more—The Next Step embodies Andrés’ gratitude and desire to give back.

What began as a personal tragedy transformed into a movement. Andrés’ journey is proof that no one has to walk alone—sometimes, all it takes is a supportive hand to help take the next step.
