10 years ago on Nov. 8, 2007, Robert Maxwell spoke to the Rotary Club of Bend High Desert in honor of Veteran's Day.  Maxwell, who lives in Bend, Oregon is the oldest living recipient of the Medal of Honor and on that day he told the club about the selfless act that earned him the Medal.  At the completion of his presentation, he received a standing ovation from the club and Past District Governor Walt Schloer honored him by presenting him with a Paul Harris Fellowship and the club bestowed an honorary membership on him.  On this year's Veteran's Day, we are proud to share Robert's official Medal of Honor citation and very proud that he is an Honorary member of our Rotary club.

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye.  Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity.  Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem.
You can't tell a vet just by looking . . . What is a vet?
Our World Polio Day Event at Roundtable was a big success.  Our members will learn just how successful it was at our October 30 meeting.   In addition to setting up our display board and the posting of the Event flyer all over the restaurant, we had a wide variety of Rotary and Polio materials for handout.  In addition, Jill Johnson, from the Deschutes County Health Department, provided a wealth of material on childhood immunizations which were of interest to the diners.  Roundtable's support was wonderful.  They posted flyers all over the restaurant and in addition to our donation container, they also had a donation basket at the front order location.  The restaurant was busy all day and we were busy all day.  Members went from table to table with a roll of "End Polio Now" stickers explaining to the diners that it was World Polio Day and Rotary's roll in polio eradication.  We also let them know that a portion of the cost of their meal that day was being donated by Roundtable to polio eradication.  Every individual who left Roundtable that day was wearing a  bright red "End Polio Now" sticker.  Talk about creating community awareness!   Roundtable's owner/manager, Corey Howland was so pleased with the turnout and what they were able to contribute that we're already talking about doing it again next year.  Thanks' Roundtable.  We couldn't have done it without you!
For the thirteenth year in a row, the Rotary Club of Bend High Desert participated in Dictionary Month during which time Rotary clubs deliver more than 17,000 dictionaries to all 3rd Graders in the district.  This is one of the projects that Rotarians like best.  Started by our own PDG Walt Schloer in 2005 when he was District Governor, the members of BHD Rotary visited Bear Creek, Juniper, Morning Star, Silver Rail, Trinity, and Ensworth Schools and delivered "The World's Best Dictionary" to 15 classes of 3rd graders.  Following are some of the photos from this year's deliveries.
