Did you know that in our part of the world, babies are fed with Coca-Cola from the baby bottle? That creates some challenges within dental care!
Our club’s work for better dental hygiene and prevention continues! Today we were at the Centre de Education Basica Juan Linda Juticalpa Santos Guardiola, Roatan, where we visited with the kindergarten and first-grade students. The Club’s President Angela, supported by our Rotary member Henry Zelaya Santos, our stuffed friend Johnny and a giant sponge tooth, helped the smallest to understand how to brush their teeth. Henry translated to Spanish and demonstrated how to brush his teeth by practicing with the children with his own toothbrush for demonstration purposes. Angela walked around with Johnny checking that all the children were trying to use the circular motion when brushing.
To end the session, each child was given a fluoride treatment, and they are definitely looking forward to Johnny's next visit as he might also be bringing his friend, the Dentist John. To see everyone's lovely smiles.
Our provisional club has prioritized these activities to help educate on the necessity of good dental hygiene as to help prevent future dental decay among children. This project is sponsored by and in conjunction with the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, Fellow Rotarian, the Dentist and our fellow John Raabe from Colorado, and the Raabe Family Dentistry Foundation.
It is also essential to understand that toothbrushing is only a tiny part of a more significant issue, as excess use of sugar from infancy in their diet is detrimental to both their teeth and health in the bigger picture.
