MR. BEANS COMES TO POCO ROTARY
Our guest speaker at our October 7, 2010 meeting was none other than Mr. Beans himself, Gene Vickers. Gene, who is also District Membership Extension Chair for our District, co-founded our club along with Barrie Seaton in 2005.
Gene came to speak about the importance of communications particularly to Rotarians. He described speaking as a process – everyone is capable of speaking well.
With that he talked about the Toastmasters organization which he also joined in 2005. Using a personal story he talked about his first presentation at a Toastmaster District Conference He went on to estoll the virtues of the program at Toastmasters of speaking projects as part of a curriculum, evaluations and feed back from peers, developing listening skills as well as leadership skills. Becoming a better speaker makes one a better listener.
Gene quoted Dale Carnegie:"90% of individual success will come from communications skills."
Being a better speaker allows Rotarians to communicate with the community better and being able to better recruit potential business leaders into Rotary. Not only that the skills learned at Toastmasters will help you run better meetings and develop better leaders in the club.
He invited all Rotarians to come to a Toastmasters meeting and "test drive" a session. They are at least five clubs in the Tri-Cities area with meetings at different times to suit an individual's time commitment.
