Hawthorne Care Centre

March 22, 2007 - The club held it's weekly meeting in the newly refurbished section at Hawthorne Care centre and presented Lenore Pickering, the Executive Director of the Centre with a cheque for $5,000. to purchase large print books, computers as a link to modern technology and to complete the Centre's library needs. Hawthorne Care Centre has operated in Port Coquitlam for 47 years. They have a compliment of 131 residents needing varied levels of assistance  The club was taken on a tour of the Assisted Living and Supportive Housing facility that has been renovated and refurbished. There are 1 and 2 person accommodations available at reasonable costs to the residents.
 

Rotary has been involved in helping Hawthorne Lodge in many ways. Bingo Nights, Pub Nights, Christmas dinners and breakfasts have been very rewarding for club members and Hawthorne residents.

 When the redevelopment project is complete, Hawthorne Seniors Care Community will become a "Campus of Care" offering a variety of care and services options. This concept envisions a single location where opportunities to access an array of housing, care and service options are provided. This concept maximizes opportunities for older adults to remain living in the same environment and neighbourhood despite changing functional and health status.

Throughout the services offered on site a focus on wellness and quality of life will predominate. The various program teams will endeavour to offer all possible supports to maximize functional ability and enable residents to self direct and retain a sense of control in their lives.

Foundational to all programs offered on site is an emphasis on a social model of service and care and a sense of "home". Resident participation in activities related to the functioning of their home and community will be encouraged and welcomed. As well, residents will be provided with opportunities to participate in social and recreational activities of their choosing.

A key goal in this project is strong community partnerships. Hawthorne's vision is one in which the boundaries between home and community are porous, allowing for a free flow back and forth and reducing the loneliness, boredom and isolation that some experience when the external world is no longer readily available to them.
