Our guest speaker today was Deborah Watson, chairman of RYLA for District 7010.

Deb gave a very informative presentation on all aspects of the RYLA program. She also indicated that her committee is always looking for new members who would like to get involved with this very worthwhile youth program.

RYLA aims to:
 Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for young people
 Provide an effective training experience for selected youth leaders
 Encourage leadership of youth by youth
 Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities  

RYLA provides young people an opportunity to expand their horizons by:
 Developing leadership skills
 Increasing self-confidence
 Gaining exposure to a variety of issues and people
 Making new friends
 Obtaining career information and skills  

RYLA participants are exposed to values that Rotarians deem essential for those who hold leadership roles: 
 Ethical behaviour    
 Integrity of character 
 Commitment to community service
 Students spend an entire weekend of intense leadership training that is provided by professional

The cost to send one student to RYLA is $380 plus transportation to Geneva Park. The deadline for applications is March 1st, 2009. Mary Bax's Vocational Service Committee is currently looking into this program and will report to the club next week.
