Raye Speirs braves the coldest morning of the season to assist Donna Hawk with the delivery of gifts to the seniors in the program.

More than 100 gaily wrapped gifts provided by the Rotary Club of Sedona Red Rocks will brighten the holiday season for some less fortunate Verde Valley residents.

This is the fourth year that Red Rocks Rotary has sponsored its Holiday Wish List project. The project’s 2015 budget was set at $1,000 but, when club members learned that four families had been nominated as recipients, they individually contributed an additional $1,500 to cover costs. As a result, five adults and fifteen children ranging in age from one to fourteen years will have their holiday gift wishes fulfilled. For the first time, five low income seniors will also benefit from the program.

Nominating forms were sent out to many Verde Valley charitable organizations, schools and churches early in November. The nominations were returned to the club for the selection process prior to Thanksgiving.

Once approved for participation in the project, the recipients are asked to provide lists of items that the club could furnish. Red Rock Rotarians shop for, wrap, tag and deliver all of the gifts purchased. Requested items this year included clothes, toys, electronics, camping gear, jackets and household goods.

In addition to the wish list items, each family also receives pantry staples and paper goods along with a grocery gift card. Festive packages of home baked cookies and pastries are also included.

According to club treasurer Donna Hawk, “the thirty-six members of Red Rocks Rotary are honored that the Wish List recipients allow them the opportunity to add a bit of cheer to this season of giving. The project truly exemplifies Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self.”
