* Our own Tom Keck is the speaker today. His topic is Shelter Box USA.
Tom is a mortgage broker who is interested in keeping a roof over the heads of people. He heard about the Shelter Box project that provides tent homes for disaster victims and ended up as the 5490 representative. All Shelter Boxes are created in England and shipped where they are needed. In six years, they have sheltered 450,000 in 30 countries, including our own. Each tent is large enough to house 10 people. In each box, there is a tent, 10 blankets, cooking utinsels, eating utinsels, cups, bowls & plates, water purification tablets, water jugs, an ax/hammer, ground claw, hand saw, and other small hand tools, activity kits for children and other items based upon the part of the world to which the box is to be shipped. Each box weighs about 100 pounds and costs $1,000 which includes shipping.
In Afghanistan boxes were packed into to the rural area on mules. Once a box is opened, the contents cannot be repacked because the air was sucked out of the box as it was packed to accommodate the items. All items in each box is of high quality and new and become the property of the recipients.
The Shelter Box project is people to people oriented, not to governments. In some areas, only the Red Cross is allowed to distribute the boxes and food stuffs. Rotary works with several international organizations to get the boxes to the places they are needed.
The project was started in the UK and all Shelter Boxes are sent from there. To donate to the project and get more information, log on to:
