The Ottumwa Rotary Club has had a transformative year, supporting a wide range of local and international projects through grants, donations, and service initiatives.
Community Enhancements
-$2,480 funded for bollards on the new Des Moines River bridge, enhancing trail safety.
-$3,600 donated for security doors at the Wapello County Expo Grounds.
-$500 donations to both Ottumwa High School Cheerleaders and Ottumwa/Wapello County 4-H for their support of the annual Chicken BBQ.
Major Grant Commitments
-Two District 6000 grants submitted, with up to $10,000 committed per project:
A Flying Eagle sculpture for Bridge View Center.
Artwork installation at the upcoming SE Iowa JBS Sports Center skate park.
Investing in Youth & Education
-Increased scholarship funding to $5,000 for Ottumwa High School students—an all-time high for the club.
-Support for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and Rotary Youth Exchange, including an outbound student to Spain.
Arts, Culture, and Special Projects
Grants included:
-$750 to Ottumwa Civic Music Association.
-$1,000 to Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Program.
-$1,000 for Ponsetti training in Argentina (Rotary International global grant).
-$1,000 to GOPIP’s Lemonade Days for a new Service Above Self Award.
-$2,500 to Ottumwa Job Corps for transitional housing support.
Focus on Youth Literacy & Safety
-Launched the Rotary Readers program, donating books and reading to students.
-Committed $3,000 to the Josh the Otter water safety program, distributing books and supporting swim lessons for local children.
Club Growth & Development
-Welcomed new members including David Decker, Blake Smith, and Mia Calcaterra.
-Exploring modern meeting formats:
Moved monthly breakfasts to The Vine on the 2nd Tuesday.
Introduced Monday evening service projects, led by David Nino-Liu and Lindsay Worth.
Financial & Operational Improvements
-Appointed co-treasurers and implemented clearer financial reporting.
-Created a dedicated fundraising account and invested in CDs for better returns.
Looking Ahead: Goals for 2025–2026
Incoming President Shea Greiner has outlined a focused and forward-thinking agenda for the coming year:
-Expand the Ottumwa Rotary Readers program to reach 2nd grade students district-wide across Ottumwa Community Schools.
-Continue the Josh the Otter water safety initiative through 2025–2026, with sights set on supporting the 2026 summer swim season.
-Grow club membership through a renewed focus on recruitment and retention of active members.
-Restart a Rotary Interact Club at Ottumwa High School, giving students an opportunity to lead a service-focused, student-run club aligned with Rotary International’s mission of leadership and community engagement.
With a strong foundation and a clear vision, Ottumwa Rotary is poised for another impactful year of service and growth.
