Owru Yari in downtown Paramaribo was once again a spectacular celebration last year, featuring the thrilling Pagara relay and various stages showcasing performances by popular bands and DJs. However, no celebration is complete without safety, and the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Quota ensured this with its annual earplug’s initiative.
With the dedicated efforts of Rotary Quota members and friends, over 10,000 earplugs were distributed before noon on New Year’s Eve to the enthusiastic crowd gathered in the city center. Safety personnel, including firefighters, ambulance workers, police officers, and residents of several elderly care homes, also received hearing protection, enabling them to enjoy the festivities worry-free.
This initiative was made possible through the proceeds from the highly successful Quota Men Cook Out event and the generous support of both occasional and long-term sponsors.
A significant highlight of last year’s campaign was the collaboration with a local well known optician, who not only donated 2,000 earplugs but also provided safety glasses for adults and children. This effort emphasized not just hearing protection but also eye safety, a gesture that was widely appreciated by the public.
One remarkable observation was the increased awareness among attendees, with more people bringing their own hearing protection. This shift reflects the effectiveness of Rotary Quota’s consistent messaging over the years and the growing recognition of the importance of prevention.
The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Quota has long been committed to supporting the hearing-impaired. The annual earplug distribution is just one of many projects aimed at fostering a healthier future.
