7 Tons of Fresh Produce... and Counting!
Twice a week, members of the Rotary Clubs of Iowa City A.M. and Iowa City Downtown travel to the Twin County Produce Auction, one of eastern Iowa's premier seasonal produce auctions located just southwest of Kalona in the heart of Iowa's Amish and Mennonite farming community.
It's an incredible place where hundreds of small family farms bring their freshly harvested produce—often delivered by horse and carriage—to be auctioned to grocery stores, restaurants, food pantries, wholesalers, and anyone from the public who wants to attend and bid.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, our two Rotary clubs have now purchased more than 14,000 pounds (7 tons!) of fresh, locally grown produce this season for the CommUnity Food Bank in Iowa City.
This week's haul featured an abundance of sweet corn, onions, and tomatoes, along with other fresh vegetables that will soon be on the tables of local families experiencing food insecurity.
Every purchase supports hardworking local farmers while providing healthy, nutritious food to our neighbors—a true example of neighbors helping neighbors.
