Today we had the Honor to have Brad Kunkel, Johnson County Sherriff speak on the declining structure of the Johnson County Jail.   There are 107.5 employees.  103 Full Time, 4 Part time.  July 1, 2025 the budget is 18 million, 85% is salary and benefits.
The current jail was built in 1979, opened in 1981.  At time the FTE was 50-52.  Population was 81,000.  The previous jail was built in 1891 located on the west side of the Courthouse. Sherriff Kunkel talked about the deterioration of the building. There are many cracks in ceiling and walls.  The roof is in disrepair. At this time the current jail does not meet any of the codes for safety of employees. and inmates.   There have been many tries to vote on a new jail and all were decline.  In 2024 Shive Hattery was consulted to build a new 101,300 square foot jail.  This new jail would house 140 inmates with the expansion to hold 100 more.  projected cost 79 million.
The roof has to be repaired immediately and will cost 53.5 million   We must pass the vote to build a new jail.
