This past Tuesday, July 25, the *Grinnell Rotary Club* gathered at the
Westside Family Restaurant for their weekly meeting. The Rotary Club's
guest speaker was Megan McKay, owner of one of the newest businesses coming
to Grinnell, the Peace Tree Brewery. Megan not only shared how she became
the owner of the Peace Tree, but also told the history of how the Peace
Tree got its name. She explained, that the name Peace Tree Brewing Company,
“serves as a reminder of our past where different cultures met at a
historic, grand sycamore tree in Marion County, Iowa to discuss trade and
come to important agreements. Our hope is that the beer made under our
label will act as a catalyst for conversations and new
friendships-reflecting the spirit of the Peace Tree."
The Peace Tree Brewing Company will be located at 923 Main Street, just
north of the theater. She explained that she is grateful to Delphina
Baumann, who owns the building, for reaching out to her to open the
Brewery. They will brew a small amount of beer on site, but most of their
beer will be coming in from their Knoxville, or DesMoines locations. The
hope is that bringing a "small, independent, and traditional brewery will
foster tourism to our community and support other local businesses." Megan
explained that she is hopeful to partner with other local restaurants, as
the Peace Tree will not run a kitchen. They will serve snacks to accompany
their brewed beer, as well as non-alcholic beverages, such as their very
own root-beer. They are hopeful to partner with other popular
establishments in Grinnell for other food options. They will offer an
area for group meetings, and hope that people will find the Peace Tree as a
place to gather and share their stories. Welcome to Grinnell Megan!
