Grinnell Rotary met Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at West Side Family Restaurant, for a meal, meeting, and program.
During the brief business meeting, upcoming event Kites Over Grinnell was discussed. Kites Over Grinnell is sponsored by Grinnell Rotary. It will be held September 30, 2017, at the Ahrens Park complex. Kites Over Grinnell is a family friendly event. Kite kits have been ordered by Rotary, and will be assembled in school by elementary students. On September 30th, kids and their families are invited to come fly a kite.
Following the business meeting, Chad Nath presented a program that addressed two topics: Davis Kids Camp and the Giving Gardens. Nath came to Grinnell by way of Estherville, IA. His wife took a job with the hospital, and Chad also began working with the hospital later. He started working with Kids Camp in 2003. This program allows children the opportunity to experience activities throughout the summer. Kids Camp is open to children, ages 6 through 13, and is sponsored by Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell-Newburg School system, Grinnell College, and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance. This summer, Kids Camp was held at Davis School, and 120 children signed up for the program. Each day, an average of 61 students attended, with more students attending on field trip days. Nath stated that a staff of 12 worked with the students. The Giving Gardens are located at 7 different locations: behind the building formerly housing Dr. Light’s office, St. John’s Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Summer Street, Davis School, Marvin Avenue, and Ahrens Day Care. Kids participating in Kids Camp harvest vegetables every Tuesday, and take the harvested produce to MICA. The Giving Gardens are open to any resident who would like to eat fresh produce.
