Bwambara Global Grant Project Approved

The Rotary Club of Kampala North is preparing to implement the Bwambara Health Centre III Project, a Global Grant initiative aimed at improving access to healthcare services in one of the most vulnerable communities in Rukungiri District.

After years of assessment, planning and partnership development, the project has now secured approval from The Rotary Foundation and is expected to commence implementation in July 2026.

Project at a Glance

The Journey So Far

The project journey began in November 2020 with a comprehensive community assessment involving members of the Rotary Club of Kampala North, Rotary Club of Rukungiri Central, local government officials, health workers, community leaders, youth volunteers and residents.

The assessment identified four potential interventions. Following additional field visits and validation exercises, Bwambara Health Centre III was selected as the project offering the greatest opportunity for sustainable community impact.

Since then, club members have worked diligently to refine project requirements, obtain quotations, secure partners and fulfil all requirements of The Rotary Foundation Global Grant process.

Why Bwambara?

Bwambara is among the most disadvantaged communities in Rukungiri District. Located in the Western Rift Valley and bordering Queen Elizabeth National Park, the area faces significant economic and social challenges.

Limited rainfall affects agricultural productivity, contributing to food insecurity and poverty. Community members also contend with periodic destruction of crops by wildlife from the neighbouring national park. These challenges have a direct impact on health outcomes and quality of life.

What the Project Will Deliver

• Village ambulance (tricycle) to support emergency transportation and referrals.
• Rainwater harvesting system to improve water availability at the health facility.
• Essential medical equipment and associated supplies.
• Community health outreach and health promotion activities.
• Health days and preventive healthcare interventions.
• Training, monitoring and evaluation activities to support sustainability.

Partnership in Action

The project demonstrates the power of Rotary partnerships. The Rotary Club of Jeju Jinsung in South Korea has committed USD 20,000 towards the project and partnered with RCKN in securing Global Grant funding.

Funding Status

The project budget of USD 49,800, inclusive of training, communication, monitoring and evaluation activities, has been approved by The Rotary Foundation.

The focus now shifts to mobilisation of local partner contributions and preparation for implementation.

How Members Can Participate

As implementation approaches, members can support the project through fundraising, participation in project visits, volunteering during health days, technical support, monitoring activities and promotion of the project among potential partners and donors.

Looking Ahead

Implementation is scheduled to begin in July 2026. Beyond equipment and infrastructure, this project represents Rotary's commitment to improving health outcomes, strengthening communities and creating lasting change where it is needed most.
