1. Why Rotarians Leave — and What Can We Do About It?

Recruiting new members is important. Keeping them engaged may be even more important.

The article examines several reasons Rotarians disengage or eventually leave their clubs, including club-member fit, engagement, leadership, cliques, respect, orientation and whether members are given meaningful responsibilities.

Why this matters to Kampala North: As we pursue our own membership and engagement goals, growth cannot simply be about bringing people through the door. It must also be about creating a Club experience that makes members want to stay, participate and serve.

One question worth asking ourselves: What makes someone want to remain an active member of Kampala North?

2. Membership Is About Impact, Not Numbers

District Governor Gerald Obai challenges clubs to look beyond membership statistics and consider what additional members actually enable Rotary to accomplish.

Two particularly simple actions stand out from his message: invite one guest and invite one inactive member back.

Why this matters to Kampala North: These are not complicated membership strategies. They are actions every member can take personally — and they fit naturally with our efforts to grow attendance, bring more visitors into our fellowships and strengthen member engagement.

Sometimes, Creating Lasting Impact can begin with something as simple as an invitation.

3. RYLA 2026 — An Opportunity to Invest in a Young Leader

The August Wave also introduces RYLA 2026, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards programme for young people aged 18–30.

Rotary and Rotaract clubs are encouraged to identify, nominate and sponsor deserving young leaders to participate.

Why this matters to Kampala North: RYLA gives us an opportunity to do more than talk about developing the next generation of leaders. We can identify a promising young person and give them access to an experience designed to build leadership, confidence and service.

Perhaps one of our “little crazy ideas” this year could begin by asking: Who is the young leader Kampala North should give this opportunity to?
