April is Environmental Month: Our Newest Commitment

Welcome to our new series dedicated to Environmental Month. This April, we look at the youngest of Rotary’s "Seven Areas of Focus" and why this global commitment is more critical now than ever before.

"Protecting our natural resources is essential to the success of our other six areas of focus, such as health and economic development. With a global population nearing 8 billion, we must act now to inspire the next generation of leaders."

Why the Environment?

In June 2020, the Rotary International Board and Trustees added Supporting the Environment as our seventh area of focus. This status allows clubs to access Global Grants specifically for ecological sustainability.

  • Member Demand: Leadership recognized a strong call from members worldwide advocating for action.
  • Strategic Impact: Environmental health is inextricably linked to disease prevention and economic development.
  • Youth Appeal: Rotary aims to inspire future leaders who prioritize climate action.

The State of the Environment in Uganda (2026)

In the "Pearl of Africa," the need for action is urgent as we face critical crossroads regarding Climate Justice:

  • Extreme Weather: Heatwaves and landslides in Eastern Uganda have displaced many families.
  • Urban Flooding: Kampala's Nakivubo Channel faces repeated flooding due to waste management challenges.
  • Agricultural Risk: 2026 is projected to be a record-warm year, threatening rural food security.
  • Biodiversity Loss: Population growth is placing immense pressure on our forests and wildlife.
