Sound the Alarm:

Every day, seven people die in home fires, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms. Sadly, children and the elderly disproportionately lose their lives. The American Red Cross wants to improve the odds and save lives, that’s why the American Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign – a nationwide initiative in 2014.

A critical part of the campaign is Sound the Alarm, a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events across the country. Between April 28, 2018 and May 13, 2018, the goal is to install more than 100,000 smoke alarms across the country. Red Cross volunteers, along with fire departments and other partners canvass at-risk neighborhoods, installing free smoke alarms, replacing batteries in existing alarms, and providing fire prevention and safety education.

Saturday, April 28, 2018

• Seeking volunteers and those needing smoke alarms
• Telethon with WQAD set for Wednesday, March 28
  • Callers who need smoke alarms call to get added to the list for a home visit to install smoke alarms on Saturday, April 28
  • Get a minimum of 350 appointments in the QCA
• Recruit & engage 200+ volunteers, community leaders, donors, and partners
• Install 700 Smoke Alarms in the Quad Cities Area on April 28, 2018
  • Scott & Muscatine Counties in Iowa
  • Rock Island, Henry, & Mercer Counties in Illinois

How you can help:

• We are recruiting volunteers for the installation event on April 28, 2018 – see attached flyer for the respective community you represent.
• We will need to get the word out about the program – and how families can access this FREE resource.
• We will be recruiting volunteers to help with the appointment telethon on March 28, 2018. – let me know if you are interested in participating.
• Proclamations at upcoming meetings would be welcome as well.

Please let me know what additional questions you may have or if you are able to assist in communicating with your constituents and/or members. Some recent examples in nearby communities include notice on water bills, notes from the mayor in community-based newsletters, etc.
